Posillipo is the promontory that, to the north, closes the Gulf of Naples, overlooking the striking Campi Flegrei. The streets meander along slopes that descend to the sea, lined with historic residences of great value. From here one can contemplate Mount Vesuvius in all its grandeur, reflected in the gulf in an image of rare beauty. This is the most representative view of Naples, with the Castel dell'Ovo rising along the coast and the Sorrentine peninsula observing it in the distance. To enjoy this view from the inside, one can walk along Via Caracciolo to Via Partenope. An electric Tuk Tuk will take you to Castel dell'Ovo and the picturesque Borgo Marinari. Piazza Bovio, known locally as Piazza Borsa, is dominated by imposing buildings and the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II. Piazza del Municipio, one of the largest in Europe and fundamental to the city, is adorned by Bernini's Neptune fountain and the Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino), which stands with the harbor and Vesuvius in the background. Piazza Trieste e Trento is home to Teatro San Carlo and Galleria Umberto I (Break with typical Neapolitan street food). Piazza del Plebiscito, with the Royal Palace and the Royal Pontifical Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, is one of the most significant examples of neoclassical architecture in Italy. Phlegraean Fields: Cuma Baia and Pozzuoli private excursion

Escape the hustle and bustle of Naples on a full-day tour of the Phlegraean Fields, the volcanic landscape of Campania surrounding the metropolis. Following a pick-up from your pre-arranged location in Naples, travel to the regional park, also known as the Campi Flegrei. The fascinating area owes its varied landscape to the numerous, now extinct and dormant volcanos, and the bradyseismic phenomena most prevalent in the Macellum of Pozzuoli. Tour this former market of the Roman colony of Puteoli, excavated in the 18th century after the discovery of a statue of Serapis. See the surviving columns of the macellum, studded with mollusc holes. Visit the Acropolis of Cuma at the site of the ruined city of Cumae on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Founded by Euboean Greeks, the most famous monument here is the Sybil cave sanctuary. Go to the former Roman seaside resort of Baiae to see the Museum of the Phlegrean Fields in the former Aragonese fortress. Much of the site is underwater, but above ground you will see the remains of temples to Venus, Diana, and Mercury. Other highlights include the enormous Roman cistern of the Piscina Mirabilis at Miseno, known in ancient times as Misenum, when it was home to the largest base of the Roman navy. Marvel at the volcanic lakes of D'Averno, Fusaro, and Miseno, before your return transfer to Naples.

From Naples: Phlegraean Fields 'The Burning Fields' Tour

The Phlegraean Fields, northwest of Naples, are a volcanic region famous in Homer and Virgil's epic poems. From Agnano to Pozzuoli, 24 geothermal springs offer mineral-rich waters and mud, still used in modern spa centers. The Greeks believed this area was the entrance to the underworld, and the Sibyl of Cumae prophesied here. The Romans later built luxurious villas, the first amphitheater, and impressive aqueducts. It’s also a place of Christian history, with St. Gennaro’s beheading and St. Paul’s arrival on his way to Rome. We had a wonderful day thanks to Alberto, our tour guide, and Luigi, our driver. We felt so safe and well looked after and the ride in the vintage Fiat car was a highlight in itself. On the tour we were able to gain many impressions of the western part of Naples and the surrounding area that are otherwise difficult to reach: the thermal baths of Baia, the many volcanic lakes, the abandoned Rione Terra with a great new museum and the impressive church building. At the end we had an espresso and a wonderful sfogliatelle. Thank you Alberto and Luigi for this day, which we will always remember very special!

Excellent day with many exciting archaeological discoveries. My guide Massimo spends neither his time nor his efforts to share his wealth of knowledge. And my driver Giovanni travels with great safety in complicated traffic and is extremely attentive.
