Extreme Trekking on the Royal Road: Barichara - Chicamocha Canyon Get ready for an epic trekking journey on one of the most challenging and legendary trails in Colombia! From Barichara, the colonial jewel of Santander, we will embark on a journey that will test your endurance and take you through breathtaking landscapes to the depths of the Chicamocha Canyon. Beginning of the route: Descent into the tropical dry forest Our adventure begins at dawn in Barichara, with its cobblestone streets illuminated by the first light of day. From here, we head towards Villa Nueva, a small town that marks the starting point for the great descent. The Camino Real, an ancestral route built by the Guanes Indians and restored during the colonial period, will lead us downhill in a total immersion in the tropical dry forest. Each step will take us into this extreme ecosystem, where the sun beats down intensely, the vegetation struggles to survive and the terrain challenges us with its constant transformation. Jordan: In the bowels of the canyon As we descend, the trail becomes more demanding until we reach Jordán, the least inhabited town in Colombia, hidden in the heart of the Chicamocha. Here we will cross its ancient stone bridge, witness to centuries of history and a point of connection between worlds. We will make a strategic pause to hydrate and recharge our batteries before the final challenge: the ascent to Los Santos. The big challenge: Ascent to Los Santos This stretch is the true test of endurance. The slope becomes steeper and the heat of the canyon adds extra difficulty. However, the reward is unmatched: from the top, the Chicamocha Canyon unfolds in all its immensity, with the river meandering hundreds of meters below and a horizon sculpted by time. Epic finale: Cable car over the abyss To close with a flourish, we will board the Chicamocha cable car, floating over the abyss on a 45-minute ride that offers an unparalleled perspective of the canyon. Back on dry land, we will take a well-deserved rest with a Santander coffee, while the sunset paints the landscape with golden tones. Are you ready to challenge the road and conquer the Chicamocha?
