Full description

Pick you up at your Beijing hotel at 7am and drive 2.5 hours to Jinshanling East. A 40-minute walking up will lead you to East-Five-Eye watchtower. You may take a few breaths before reaching the Wall, and will be rewarded by the breathtaking panoramic view of this amazing human constructions. Once standing on the top of the Wall, you could see Simatai, Jinshanling and Gubeikou in a clear day, what a spectacular view! You will walk mainly on brick steps at Jinshanling section and some of them are big. This section of the Wall is very popular among keen photographers for its intact watchtowers, beacon towers and other solid constructions. The steps rise up and down constantly and scenery is changing at every watchtower. Take a short break and some photos here, you will then walk westward to Jinshanling. You will get through Shalingkou and Zhuanduokou and then off the Wall at Taochunkou. Walking on the hilly trail for some 1 hour and taking a break at the cottage at Jinshanling West Gate. Continuing the walking through jungles for half an hour, you will come back to the Wall again at 24-Eye Watchtower at Gubeikou. You could see the panoramic view of the Tiger Hill in a distance if weather permits. The rest of 1.5 hours’ walking on the Dragon Hill is relatively flat and easier. Our driver is waiting for you at the end of Gubeikou. You will drive 2.5 hours back to Beijing.

The driver picked me up and was very attentive throughout the trip, but I was not assisted during the trail. I asked about deviations from the route on the wall, they sent me the same photo of a tower (all towers are very similar) with an arrow drawn on it. I had to ask them to stop sending me the same photo and to respond with information. When I repeated my question, they told me to follow the points marked on the trees (the path forks, that's why my question). That was all the assistance, they did not resolve my questions to be sure about my path. They sent me to follow the points (which I can do alone without assistance), therefore if you hire the service, it would only be for the transport and the map, which does not have the distances in km, nor is it satellite. It is a drawing of arrows with distance in hours. I think it is very important that you know this, since I bought this trail for the assistance (which there was not) and the map (which was a drawing).

The entire trek is without a guide. We took the wrong direction and ended up making a back trek to the right track. Entire journey is about 8km plus an additional 4km for the wrong track. Just make sure when you reached the first tower, there will be signs indicating where you are, the other way is much rugged and dangerous. Based on the actual trek of 8km is doable except get ready for really steep ascent and descent at certain parts of the wall, get prepared for that. Driver met us at the end of the journey. Overall a great experience minus all the aches that follows.
