The whole trip was great - both Bromo and Ijen are amazing. Of course we spent many hours in the car (because of the distance and the traffic), but it was not that painful because of our driver and a guide - Made Cheng. He is really the best driver on Bali (and we have the comparison). we highly recommend this trip with this driver to everyone;)

This was an unforgettable experience. Our guide that drived us to Java, Kadek Adi, made the difference. He is a genuinly good person and was always there trying to help us in all ways possible during the three days. Going to Mount Bromo in the Jeep with a local guide was more than we hoped for. Mount Ijen was also memorable. We climbed with another local guide that was very kind. Please note that this is a car journey, and as such, it will take you several hours in a car on day 1. It’s manageable, you stop to toilet, buy something in supermarkets, stop to lunch, and to the ferry. First day might feel hard. Trekking in Ijen Crater might be a bit hard depending on physical condition, basically because it’s very steep. In the end, we enjoyed the experience and we can’t thank enough to Adi. We wish you all the best! If I can leave some possible points for improvement, one is fast driving, and the other is the hotel of day 1 - maybe you can find another a bit better near the entrance.

Full description

Spend 3 days exploring the volcanic landscapes of East Java. Take in a spectacular sunrise and panoramic views from the peak of Mount Bromo. Marvel at the blue flames on a descent into the Ijen crater.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Bali–Gilimanuk Harbour–Mt. Bromo
From western Bali travel by ferry to the eastern tip of Java. Drive to the Mount Bromo area, with a lunch stop along the way. On arrival, check in at the hotel.

Day 2: Mt. Bromo–Banyuwangi (Ijen Crater)
Very early in the morning, head to the rim of the Tengger caldera. Marvel at the panoramic views at sunrise with the active Mount Semeru volcano in the background.

Continue to Mount Bromo. Take a short walk and climb the 240 stairs to the peak. After breakfast back at the hotel, drive to Banyuwangi, with a lunch break en route. Check in at the hotel.

Day 3: See the panoramic Ijen Crater–Bali
Just after midnight see the panoramic of Ijen creater.


Stop at the miner’s shack for a short rest and head back to the hotel for breakfast before the return trip to Bali.

Know before you go

  • - For Ijen activities, you must have a health certificate from the doctor/clinic/hospital the day before the activity takes place. And costs are borne by the customer (approximately IDR 300,000)
  • The accommodation in Bromo will be Cafe Lava Hostel, SM Bromo Hotel, or Grand Whiz Hotel and will depend on availability
  • The accommodation in Banyuwangi (Ijen) will be at Villa Kayon depending on availability
  • All hotels are comfortable and overlook Bromo. They are equipped with sheets, clean running water, and Wi-Fi, and serve continental breakfast
  • Please bring a warm jacket, hiking shoes, a standard mask, and a camera

We had an amazing experience with our guide, Made Cheng, during our three-day adventure. He was incredibly sweet, funny, and a pleasure to be around. The trip was super well-organized, and Made ensured we felt safe throughout. Both Mt. Bromo and the Ijen Crater were surreal experiences and definite highlights of our trip to Indonesia. Although the drive was (very, very) long, it was absolutely worth it. Made shared numerous stories during our journey. On the way home, we stopped in his village and had dinner at his sister's warung, so lovely! At Ijen Crater, we had Chung (handsome guy with amazing, long hair) as our local guide. He shared stories about the miners working there and the challenging conditions they endure (his father works there), giving us some perspective – it really made an impression on us. Thank you for that, Chung! Overall, it was just an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend Made as your guide – he knows all the right people and the best spots
