Charlotte Amalie: Visit Iconic Sites & Tour Fort Christian

Charlotte Amalie: Visit Iconic Sites & Tour Fort Christian

Step into 350 years of Caribbean history on a walking tour like no other. This experience was created in collaboration with Danish and Virgin Islands historians and is the only tour that includes access to Fort Christian and a newly restored Slave House. We begin inside Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands. As we explore this military fortress, you’ll wind through centuries-old passageways, descend into the dungeon, and climb to the ramparts, where breathtaking views of the Charlotte Amalie harbor await. These are the same vistas that Danish governors and soldiers once scanned during pirate raids and fierce invasions. From there, history unfolds with every step as we journey through town and visit some of Charlotte Amalie’s most iconic landmarks, each layered with stories of ambition, resistance, and reinvention. You might find yourself standing in front of Hotel 1829, a lavish 19th-century merchant’s mansion, or climbing the legendary 99 Steps, built from bricks once used as ballast in sailing ships. We may pause at one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere, admire centuries-old churches, or glimpse into the past at the former estate of General Santa Ana. And those are just a few of the possibilities. As your guide leads you through this charming Caribbean port town's winding streets and hidden alleys, you’ll learn the stories that textbooks leave behind. Step back into a world of pirates, privateers, and colonial intrigue, and see how the island’s past still echoes through its vibrant present. We end the tour at one of the most memorable stops: #13 Wimmelskafts Gade, a beautifully preserved 200-year-old structure that once served as a slave’s quarters and is now home to the island’s beloved 3 Queens Distillery. Your guide will share the moving history of the structure, its inhabitants' lives, and how they helped shape the cultural fabric of St. Thomas. Inside the distillery, you’ll learn how the art of rum-making is tied to Caribbean history. And then unwind in a lush garden with a complimentary glass of house-made rum punch. It’s the perfect place to relax, reflect on the journey, and soak up the island spirit before heading back into the heart of Charlotte Amalie. NOTES: The tour starts at Fort Christian and ends at the 3 Queens Distillery at #13 Wimmelskafts Gade. There may be up to a mile of walking, but the endpoint of the tour is only a 5-minute walk to return to Fort Christian along Main Street.

Fantastic tour from a knowledgeable, personable guide. Due to off season, my wife and I were Rocky’s only guests today, but he still gave a full tour and took time to make sure we had a local experience. The relationships he has with the local restaurant owners add a layer of depth and home comfort to an already delicious tour!

The tour was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Our guide was very accommodating because we were doing dry January; so having more nonalcoholic options would have been great, but we had an excellent time!
