Naples: LAPIS Museum Guided Visit in Italian

Naples: LAPIS Museum Guided Visit in Italian

The Water Museum is the hub of the underground path of the Basilica of Pietrasanta. This fantastic hydraulic engineering project brings the ancient Greco-Roman cisterns back into operation. This complex, located in the historic center of Naples, was built by the architect Cosimo Fanzago in the mid-seventeenth century, on the remains of the Ancient Temple of the goddess Diana. The Basilica of Pietrasanta, today LAPIS Museum, boasts a suggestive underground path, a "Submerged Decumanus". Today the cisterns find water and runoffs, and have been enhanced by a technical lighting system that emphasizes volumes and vaults thanks to lights and colors. A significant step was taken by installing the first archaeological lift in the historic center, capable of connecting the environment of the crypt with the subsoil in just 20 seconds, descending to a depth of 35 meters and 2000 years back in time.

Naples: City and Lapis Museum Tour with an Archaeologist

Naples: City and Lapis Museum Tour with an Archaeologist

Naples is one of the oldest cities in Italy and preserves the world's largest underground path: between Greek cisterns, Roman aqueducts, and WWII air shelters, 45% of the city's underground is practically empty. There are different ways to access the underground of Naples, and the experience will take you through a real hidden gem. Embark on a real archaeological journey in the undergrounds (the tour is the LAPIS Museum path). The tour starts from piazza San Gaetano, the ancient Greek-Roman square, where you'll walk through streets and local culture to understand the "underground cults of Naples." Admire a gothic church and peer through its glass floor at the remains of a previous ancient mosaic. Next, go 40 meters below the crowds of Naples through a doorbell in one of the oldest churches of the city: Santa Maria Maggiore. The church, built on a Pagan Roman temple dedicated to Diana, still features Roman structures. Keep journeying downwards to see the Greek cisterns carved into the tough stone. Once you arrive at the lowest point of the route, walk through the tunnels to reach the tanks used for the collection of water in Roman times. This trail was also used in medieval times as a secret passage by the Templar Knights and in 1943 as an airplane retreat. Many of the bathrooms, kitchens, and memorabilia are still preserved to this day.

The signs on site, for example Italian tour on the right and English tour on the left. So you had to fight your way through the crowds, ask at the front, then go back through the crowds to get on the right side. Simply hang up signs at the top of the entrance or something like that.

I loved being able to walk through the narrow passages lit only by the light from our phones. I also enjoyed listening to how the underground areas were used for sheltering during bombing of Naples in WWII.

Elio simply fantastic!!! Never lose your enthusiasm and your sympathy! Attentive, available, precise and very prepared!!! Congratulations indeed!

Excellent, our guide Massimo made it so fun and very interesting!

Highly entertaining and very informative. Loved it.
