Witness one of the world’s only advancing glaciers at Perito Moreno. The spectacular location in Patagonia’s Glaciers National Park provides the setting for a day watching nature at its most miraculous.
What to Expect
This 6-hour tour departs El Calafate for the Glaciers National Park in southern Argentina, where you will visit one of the few glaciers left on the planet that is still advancing.
The glacier’s remarkable color gives it the appearance of a gigantic blue slushy. Traversed by a series of walkways that afford panoramic views, you will begin your navigation on the Rico Arm, passing in front of the towering wall of advancing ice.
You will spend the day watching the glacier slowly move, but the event that will make your day complete is when sections of the ice suddenly calve into the chilly waters below.
Even small calvings can send a roar into the sky, but occasionally sections the size of buses tumble into the lake, where they start their journey bobbing about as icebergs.
As the glacier stretches across the lake it forms a natural dam. The pressure of the water forms a tube of ice that, every few years, collapses in a terrific explosion. This event can last 1 or 2 days, offering a spectacular show of singular beauty.
Whether you are lucky to catch this particular piece of natural theater or not, the park’s series of strategically placed walkways and bridges will allow you to witness the park and glaciers from various vantage points throughout the day.
You will have the services of a bilingual English and Spanish speaking guide to explain the phenomenon, and introduce you to one of the most dramatic places on earth.
