Marvel at stunning, panoramic views of the Argentine Lake, the Andes Mountains, and glaciers from El Calafate Balcony. Head out on a 4x4 tour and look for Cretaceous period fossils at El Laberinto de Piedras.
What to Expect
El Calafate Mountain Park is accessed by the Balcony chairlift. Take in the impressive lake and mountain views on the ride up!
Your overall El Calafate experience lasts about 3 hours. Depart from your hotel and ride approximately 15 km until you reach the entrance to Huyliche Mountain. There, you will ascend to the top with exclusive trekkers. At the top you’ll meet your guide and driver and begin a 90-minte 4x4 tour. Enjoy the sights of the steppes, continuing on until you reach an elevation of 3,445 feet.
The first stop is a natural viewpoint where you’ll take in the stunning sights of El Calafate and the central part of the Argentine Lake. You’ll also enjoy views of the Andes mountain range and the glacier accumulation area, towards Boca Del Diablo, the narrowest part of the lake.
If you’re lucky and the day is sunny and clear you’ll see Mt. Fitz Roy and Mt. Torre in El Chalten, and you might also see condors in flight.
Continue upwards to El Laberinto de Piedras. This is a formation dating from the Cretaceous period of 85 million years ago. Where there was once a river you can now find fossils dating from this prehistoric time.
You can opt to descend by chairlift at 9:00 or 14:30, or by Mexican Hats.
