Full description

Explore the Scottish Highlands on this bus day trip from Edinburgh. Take in classic sights like Stirling, Doune, and Inveraray castle. Admire natural landscapes like Loch Lubnaig, Glen Ogle, and the Arrochar Alps.

Hop aboard the spacious and airconditioned bus in Edinburgh and travel west, passing in the imposing show of Stirling Castle which rests high on its volcanic rock. Visit to Doune Castle which was featured in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

Drive into the Highlands, past the lovely Loch Lubnaig, and up through impressive Glen Ogle. Stopping nearby at a place where you can purchase lunch with views of the surrounding natural scenery.

After lunch, drive further into the Highlands, stopping to view one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, Kilchurn Castle. Marvel at this relic which juts into Loch Awe and is stunningly framed by mountain peaks.

Venture to Inveraray, a quaint town built in the mid-18th century, on the shore of Loch Fyne. Have free time to explore the town and pick up some Highland souvenirs, or pay an optional visit to Inveraray Castle (closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays), the historic home of the Duke of Argyll. Begin your homeward journey, driving over the Arrochar Alps, an attractive range of mountains, with a brief pause near the top of the "Rest and Be Thankful Pass. Reach Loch Lomond, and visit the charming village of Luss before returning to Edinburgh.

Meeting point

You can find the Edinburgh departure and return point outside the green Ensign Ewart pub. There is currently a shortage of taxis and private hire cabs in Edinburgh, which may make it harder to get to the departure point if you're thinking of using a taxi. It is strongly recommended that you allow for more time to reach the departure point in the morning and look into public transport options as a backup.

Several stops on the tour and there was ample time given to each one, particularly the castles which was my main reason for booking this tour. Driver (Martin?), was good, gave information but didn't talk for the sake of it and got us where we needed to be in good time. Only two issues and they were to do with the vehicle. 1. Seat belt was a nightmare to use. 2.The seat in front of me kept reclining even though its occupant didn't ask it to and in a coach that size meant I had no room at all. I have been on Timberland Tours before and will probably do so again.

The tour was well organized and our driver (Eric) was very nice, reasonably entertaining, knowledgeable and drove well. The scenery was lovely and so was Inveraray Castle, the cake/tarts in the teahouse are sensational. Why only 4 stars, too many stops were made that weren't necessary. There was a bit of a lack of time elsewhere.. On the very beautiful Loch Lomond we stopped at a completely overcrowded stretch of beach instead of stopping at a more idyllic spot, but this may not be available in combination with a toilet. So the 5 stars were only just missed and overall the tour is recommended.

Amazing day! Amazing sights! Amazing history lessons! This perfectly timed tour allowed us to see so much so quickly with our knowledgable, capable and chill guide Fraser. Highly recommend! We saw castles, cows, ruins, lochs, bridges, waterfalls and amazing views that took our breath away! We learned about the history of Scottish wars, clans, kilts, music, forestry, castles, kings and queens. This was a long day but worth every second.
