Hostess was fab and very much got into her role, shared some interesting information which was great for the beginning of our trip as it really set the scene for the history of Edinburgh. However, we went on a Monday evening and was extremely surprised by the large group who accompanied us, there was 40+ people which on a tour with one speaker caused some issues...if you weren’t at the front you couldn’t hear a thing when in the grave yard, such a shame as we missed a lot of info/stories. Not sure if the day tours are less busy? The vaults were great, went into 2 separate vaults and was really able to grasp the history. Would recommend watching some stuff online just to prepare as we weren’t aware there was poltergeist activity in one of them...my partner wasn’t very comfortable but both felt surprisingly calm. Aside from the large group, definitely would recommend as a must see and experience if visiting!
This was an eye opener! Our tour guide was fantastic, extremely knowledgeable and very entertaining. He had a red beard and pony tail. I should have remembered his name but it’s not my strongest character trait. We walked through cemeteries and learned about some of the very unsavory practices that went on years ago. We Also learned the origins of many sayings... such as ‘A stiff drink’ and the ‘The Graveyard Shift’. We then walked uphill to a magnificent view of the city and learned about the persecution of many ‘accused’ witches. I would not have faired well having both red hair and a large birthmark on my back. A very scary thought indeed. We then saw some unfinished architecture (which I preferred that way). Our tour guide was FANTASTIC! It was a throwback of yesteryear in the Old Town of Edinburgh. I highly recommend this tour..,, just wear your walking shoes!
We had a superb tour last night with James who was kitted out with full make up and costume and fake arms hanging under his coat. He managed to engage every single one of us with his witty banter despite having a large number of non English speakers in the group. He was incredibly entertaining and informative and had us all in stitches, and even jumping out of our skin on a few occasions with his spooky tales. We’ve been laughing all day about some of his comments. The vaults and the cemetery were incredibly chilling and my 11 year old daughter loved it. The right balance between humour and grisly tales.
Dr Joseph Bell was a very clear and articulate guide. We didn't get as many scary stories as expected, but did get some good bits of history and context. We also missed a couple of specific locations in the graveyard because there was another tour there, which I think should be better coordinated in future as I believe one of them had been investigated by paranormal investigators who actually came up with stuff. We only know this because another person on the tour had been there before and told us about it.
Amazing tour led by an amazing tour guide, Dr Knox. The tour was very creepy and Dr Knox made us jump and laugh a lot. It was also so interesting giving you information on Edinburgh’s history. We were on a girls weekend away and a few of the girls were nervous about going on a ghost walk but for all of us it turned out to be the highlight of the trip! Highly recommend. Would deffo do it again!!!
