What to Expect
Cycle through the old lands of Zululand on a history-filled 3-day bike tour. Journey through the battlefields of the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War, where the Zulu Kingdom fought for and lost their independence to the British Empire. This trip, filled with exercise, information, and luxurious accommodations, is an exciting way to experience the wilderness of South Africa.

Take the opportunity to learn about an important time in history for this every-changing land. Not only will leading experts explain the battles to you, but you will also journey across the fields where the battles were fought. Immerse yourself in Zululand and learn the true meaning of “living history”.

Your 3-day journey itinerary looks like:

Day 1:
Start off your journey in the port city of Durban, the second largest city in South Africa. Here, you will be met by your Bike and Saddle guide for a trip introduction and orientation. Feel the pull of the Zululand Battlefields as you travel into the heart of Kwazulu Natal, past traditional villages and quaint towns, and across the mighty Tugela River to the Fugitive’s Drift Lodge, a National Heritage Site that overlooks the historic Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana battle sites.

Fugitive’s Drift is a luxurious, world-class property. Rest in private cottages boasting amazing panoramic views of the Buffalo River and the rolling hills. The Lodge pioneered tours of the Zululand Battlefields and has become world-renowned, having won a Royal Geographic Society Award in 1999 and a Vision in Tourism Award in 2002. Enjoy a welcoming glass of bubbly as you arrive in your room. As the afternoon comes, your guide will take you on a walk to important historical battle sites. Keep your eyes open for African wildlife on the plain! In the evening, you will return to the Lodge for dinner, wine, and time to read in the Harford Library.

Day 2:
Rise with the sun and enjoy a hearty breakfast. Then get ready to cycle and set out into the private reserve. As the warm air rushes past your face, you will notice that you share the land with all sorts of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, birds, and more. Keep your camera at the ready! As rural towns and kraals pass by, you will begin to feel more and more at one with Zululand.

After a mid-morning coffee break, a leading expert will regale you with the story of the Battle of Isandlwana. Pay respect to the fallen soldiers as you walk across the battle site and visit the grave site. After walking down Isandlwana Mountain, you will rest in the shade of a tree to escape the heat and partake of a gourmet meal and drinks. Take the rest of the day to relax, go horse riding, or go on a game drive before enjoying dinner around a blazing fire.

Day 3:
The day begins with another cycle trip, this time to Rorke’s Drift. The second half of the battle happened here, and unlike at Isandlwana, where the British army suffered huge losses, they were victorious at Rorke’s Drift. Once again, you will pass by small local villages and feel the spirit of Zululand fill your bones.

Once you reach Rorke’s Drift you will take a break for lunch in the form of gourmet picnic feast with drinks. Leading experts with offer stories regarding the battle. After a final day of history and fun, you will head out from Fugitive’s Drift and travel back to Durban.
