It was nice, a beautiful walk, if you're looking to get out of the city. However, given that the Palace tours end/close by 15:00 and the lights don't start until 16:30, you're left with an hour and a half of doing nothing out in the cold. It was also more difficult to get to than anticipate, an entirely hour long bus from downtown Dresden. Good event if you've already explored the Christmas markets, but if it's this or the downtown Christmas markets I recommend staying in the city center (Rundbrunnen, and Stallhof were the best, this was underwhelming comparatively).

The light installations were beautiful with different music along the way. We had read that the gardens could be very busy but at 5pm on a Wednesday in December it was relatively empty. Towards the end a number of groups arrived but we weren’t hampered by them at all. The refreshment stalls halfway around the route became busy but we waited until the end and didn’t need to queue. An excellent evening.
