Dragon Lake

A unique guided hiking up to the mythical Dragon Lake in Greece, explore the beauty of nature, take memorable photos of cliffs and wild goats, and discover the small village of Papingo. The route is mostly uphill and in the middle of it is the Astraka shelter. During the tour visitors may take a few breaks to drink water from the springs while observing flowers with vivid colors (mostly wild lily) growing at high altitudes. At the end of the route (and about 2,000 meters altitude) there is Drakolimni Lake where visitors may take a break to absorb the breathtaking views. Those seeking adventure could search in the lake for Alpine Tritons (Ichthyosaura alpestris) On the way back there is a planned visit to the Ovires of Rogovos (natural swimming pools) in Papigko village

Discover the majestic natural beauty of Greece on this guided trek. Climb to a magnificent alpine lake which offers wonderful views of the high peaks surrounding it and the path leading to it. Sit down for a delicious picnic lunch along the way, and make friends with some of the local mountain goat-antelopes. Start your ascent at the village of Mikro Papigko, following a well-carved path to the mountain refuge of Astraka. Throughout the climb, you will have excellent views of the Towers of Papigko and Mount Nemertsika (in Albania), among others. Then descend to the dry (in summer months) Xerolimni Lake, which was formed by glaciers millions of years ago. Get rewarded with satisfaction after a steep hike to the lake, and snap some pictures of the Balkan chamois (goat-antelope) and wonderful views of the Aoos Canyon and Mount Smolikas (the second-highest in Greece). Enjoy the fresh air and stunning natural views of the region before getting dropped off back at your accommodation.
