Visit St. Catherine’s Monastery, where Moses received the 10 Commandments from God at the foot of Mount Sinai. Beautifully isolated, you will get dramatic views of the mountain and the Sinai Desert. Tour the monastery with an expert Egyptologist.
What to Expect
Take a tour to one of the holiest places in the world on this trip from Dahab through the Sinai Desert to St. Catherine’s Monastery, located in the remote city of the same name.
The city dates back to the days of the Pharaohs, who mined the area for gold, turquoise and copper. But it was the Romans who built a monastery on the location where Moses is believed to have received the 10 Commandments.
Start with an early morning departure for the 90-mile (150-kilometer) drive to St. Catherine’s. Once at the site an expert Egyptologist will introduce you to the history and religious significance of the surroundings.
The monastery was built to honor the martyr St. Catherine of Alexandria, who was sentenced to death because of her faith. Refusing to die on the rack, she was eventually beheaded. According to legend, she was then carried to the site of the monastery on the wings of angels.
Discover some of the exquisite mosaics and icons in the monastery, and visit the Greek Orthodox Chapel, before pausing for lunch and the return journey to Dahab at around 15:00.
