  • Enjoy fantastic views of the salt mines in Maras
  • Take in stunning views of the Andes from the Chinchero Plateau
Full description
Head out on a drive along the Andean plateau in Chinchero to take in fantastic views of the Chicon Mountain as your 6-hour tour begins. Stop in Moray for a guided visit of the deep circular terraces of Moray. The purpose of the terraces is uncertain, but their depth, design and orientation with respect to wind and sun create a temperature difference of up to 15C/27 F from the top to the bottom. It is thought that the temperature difference was used to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. Continue to the Maras salt mines, comprising around 3,000 small wells of about 5 square meters. They have been used since Incan times for economic exchange.

The tour covered Salineras de Maras and Moray and also a stop at one farm where they present you how they color the wool from llamas and alpacas and then they ask you to buy something several times. That last part I didn’t like as much. We also stopped at one shop in Maras where we had a chocolate tasting and then you could buy all kinds of salt and chocolates, but nobody pressed you. The guide was excellent! The bus driver drove very fast so the ride was very bumpy. The tour started and ended on time which was very nice.

I could enjoy Maras and Moray at a reasonable price. Both of those sites are so fantastic, and I bought small packages of natural salt at Maras for souvenirs. The guide Julio was so friendly and full of information, he also gave me personal explanation while he had time for free time. I highly recommend it.

This tour was okay. Small group, the guide gave explanations in Spanish and English. First they stop at the textile center to show the dyeing process. Next is Moray. If you have visited other archeological sites, Moray will not be interesting. Then they take you to Maras, worth the visit. We had other guides that made the tour worth it, this one only said what was needed, really basic explanations.
