It was a long journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu but taking the scenic railway was the best way to get to the destination. It felt like a romantic movie. The bus ride to go up the mountain was a little scary if you’re not used to it, but to know that the beauty of Machu Picchu is waiting for you on the top is exciting. Our guide during the tour was Uriel. You can tell that he loves sharing about the history of the place and the Incas. We had free time afterwards in the town of Aguas Calientes to explore. Overall, it was an excellent tour!

It is a long journey but we had an awesome experience! Super helpful people and well organized. We went to the agency's office two days before our visit to get the tickets -- Jesús provided details about the tour and gave us all the information we needed. On the day booked for the tour, a driver picked us up at the hotel on time and we headed to Ollantaytambo where we took the train to Aguas Calientes. It was easy to find the guide waiting for us at the train station. We did the cirtuit 3, which is not the most popular but it is incredible. It allows you to visit the middle and the lower part of Machu Picchu and it was not crowded at all. Uriel, our guide, was excellent: very helpful, passionate about the history (also he takes great pictures). The tour ended past 8pm when the driver dropped us off at the hotel in Cusco.

Full description

Start the adventure by picking up your accommodation within the historic center of the city of Cusco, traveling by tourist bus to the train station in Ollantaytambo (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes). Boarding the train to Aguas Calientes (approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes), arrival at the train station in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo). Assistance from the agency to take the bus to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu (approximately 25 minutes), Guided tour of Machu Picchu (approximately 2 hours), after the guided tour, assistance to take the bus back to the town from Aguas Calientes (approximately 25 minutes), free time to have lunch on your own in one of the typical restaurants in the area, at the previously indicated time, you must be at the Aguas Calientes train station to board the train to destination to Ollantaytambo station (approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes), when you arrive at Ollantaytambo station, the bus will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation in Cusco (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes).

The trip was amazing. We had a great guide (apologies, we can’t remember his name, but he was the English speaking guide), he was really funny, and provided us a lot of interesting and knowledgeable information along the way. It was raining during the whole tour but this didn’t take away from the experience due to the amazing guide. We did circuit 3 so we didn’t get the top view point picture but we did get a great picture and got to walk amongst the ruins. We also loved the panoramic views from the train. A few things to note about the tour: - You don’t get a guide for the train journey. So you get picked up and dropped at the train station, where you get the train alone and then meet your guide when you get off at the other end. It originally sounded a bit daunting but it was fine. - You are given all your tickets ahead of the tour. We were informed a day before the tour that we needed our tickets. The company kindly dropped them at our hotel reception for us.
