Full description

Your professional tour guide will pick you from your accommodation in Cusco between 4:00AM and 4:30AM. After a 2-hour drive, you will arrive in Cusipata where you will stop for breakfast and buy water and snacks for the trek. Following breakfast, you'll travel one more hour to the hike starting point, at 4,850 meters. From there you will start your 3.5-kilomter trek to Rainbow Mountain over both flat and uphill terrain. During your hike you will enjoy amazing views and encounters with wild alpacas, llamas, and vicuñas. Once you reach the top at 5,010 meters, you can make use of some free time to take a break, and if the weather is good, you will be able to enjoy views over Rainbow Mountain. You'll go downhill to the starting spot for another hour, where you will take transportation back to Cusipata where a local lunch will be waiting for you. We had a great experience with the Rainbow Mountain Tour! The hike is mostly flat until the end which has a steep incline, but what makes it difficult is the elevation. Would definitely recommend booking this excursion after a few days of acclimating in Cusco if possible. The hike starts around 13,000 ft and goes up to 17,000 ft (5200 m)!! Our tour guide, Amilcar, was extremely knowledgeable and caring. He was very mindful of the elevation and made sure to check in with everyone in the group multiple times during the hike to make sure we were doing okay. If we were struggling, he was able to help us get a horse to ride for part of the trail for 60 soles (the horses can only bring you up to the steep portion at the end). Breakfast and lunch is included at a local restaurant with traditional foods and buffet-style. Pick up was around 4am and we returned around 5pm to Cusco. The views were actually amazing and live up to the hype!

Rainbow Mountain is closed due to a dispute among the local community and government. We were instead offered a tour of Palcoyo, a similiar location with beautiful multicolored mountains. There are several different rainbow mountains at Palcoyo as well as a nice hiking trail. Palcoyo's elevation is a little lower than Rainbow Mountain (16,000 vs 17,000 ft) and the hike is a bit easier. A hearty breakfast and lunch was provided. Highly recommend!

It was good except rainbow mountain is closed so we had to hike "colorful mountain ". It was still beautiful and our guide was great and we were served breakfast before and lunch after. It was just surprising that as late as 4pm the day before they confirmed our tour of rainbow mountain. And at 6pm they told us rainbow mountain was closed. Apparently it's been closed for a while.
