Full description

Take a day trip from Rethymno to set out on an outdoor adventure into Samaria Gorge National Park. Hike at your own pace with a guide over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees, along a river, and by fresh-water springs. Keep an eye out for mountain goats roaming in the wild.

Begin your full-day excursion to Samaria Gorge with a pick-up in Rethymno and a drive to Omalos, in the heart of the White Mountains, where you can enjoy breakfast before you start the hike.

Be accompanied by a mountain escort who speaks English, German and French. Get briefed about your hike and get your tickets for the entrance and ferry boat from your escort. These fees have to be paid to the guide upon arrival.

After breakfast, enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace as your guide will be at the end of the group to help out if you need them. At the end of the trek, visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops.

Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide. Late in the afternoon, board a boat to go from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point.

This was an excellent trip down to Samaria Gorge. Booking this essentially just provided rides to and from, and they also took money to buy the tickets for the gorge and ferry back. Be wary though, it was a difficult hike, Many didn't wear proper footwear and came out with scraped knees and blisters. Hiking boots required, sandals recommended for post hike!! Would absolutely recommend this to everyone as it made the journey a breeze.

Walking from the start to the wee bus is actually just short of 22km! The steps at the start are a killer, though you will only appreciate this the next day when your calf muscles refuse to work. The scenery is very dramatic and in places beautiful. The trip was exceptionally well organised and communication with the actual trip provider was also excellent. We laughed at the reviews saying it was hard and thought folk were exaggerating and as we do a lot of rough terrain day walks as part of our work and are quite fit we assumed we would find it relatively easy. However, it is very tough in the heat and the older you are the harder it is on the knees and muscles... you have been warned!

We were picked up at the hotel on time. Short stop at the tavern. But there was only toast or croissants. I would advise everyone to buy something to eat beforehand. At 9 o'clock we went into the gorge. Everyone was allowed to walk alone, the guide only brought up the rear so that everyone arrived in Agia Roumeli on time. On the way there is a water station to fill up bottles every km or at least every 2nd. In general, I was happy to have my hiking boots on. Because the path consisted more of stones than of earth. We had about 1 hour for refreshment at the end in Agia Roumeli. There are changing rooms, as well as umbrellas and loungers that you could rent for €10 (you got a free drink for that). Unfortunately, the beach there is a pebble beach, flip-flops or bathing shoes would be an advantage, but of course you have to carry them. Cool trip, but very exhausting
