Full description
Samaria Gorge, the longest and likely the best-known gorge in Europe, lies 4,000 feet above sea level. Your full-day (12-hour) excursion to Samaria Gorge begins with a pick-up in Rethymno and a drive to Omalos, in the heart of the White Mountains, where you can enjoy breakfast before you start the hike. The trek will take you over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river and by fresh-water springs. Along the way, you’ll have spectacular views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range and you are likely to see mountain goats roaming in the wild. You will be accompanied by a professional mountain escort who speaks English, German and Greek.  Your escort will be there to explain all the necessary information about your hike and provide you the tickets for the entrance and ferry boat. Entrance fee : 5€ (children up to the age of 15 years old are free of charge). Ferry fee : 11€ ( Sougia ferry). These fees have to be paid to the guide upon arrival. After your breakfast you enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace as your guide will be at the end of the group to help out if you need them. At the end of the trek you’ll visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars and shops. Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide. Late in the afternoon you’ll board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point.

Very good journey with an amazing view. Excellent guide. I have 2 recommendations: take things to eat with you. The bus makes an stop in an horrible restaurant, where things are over expensive and do not taste good. Would be an horrible start of a day. And get hiking shoes. They are very handy for the journey

The tour was well organized. The transfer bus came right on time. A very nice drive into the mountains to the starting point in the national park. There was the possibility for a short breakfast in a tavern. Every 2 km there was the possibility to fill up the water at a spring. There are even 3 to 4 toilets for the ladies along the way. I recommend comfortable, sturdy shoes - it is 16 km almost entirely over hill and dale downhill from 1,200 m to 0 to the sea. At the harbor I had 2 hours for a good meal in the numerous small taverns on the quay or in the mini village. The tour guide Inge was very dedicated and spoke 4 languages fluently. To the gorge: breathtakingly beautiful. I can only recommend it!

The transfer and trip went really well. However, our “guide” was practically non-existent. You run the tour completely yourself, which we liked very much, but maybe not in the expectation of everyone. The tour is easy to walk, we were down exclusive breaks in 4 hours and were able to relax the afternoon. Unfortunately there are a lot of people on the way. Actually even more under normal conditions. One often feels driven and cannot enjoy the really wonderful landscape in peace. Nevertheless, we think it is a must for every visitor to Crete.
