Hike along a path that follows the route of the ancient Taras River. Admire the caves that formed a natural shelter for the Cretans in war times and now are home to wild goats. See the abandoned village of Samaria before reaching the Iron Gates, 3 kilometers before the end of the gorge. Rest and enjoy lunch (at your own expense) at the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli. We really enjoyed the tour. I would recommend everyone to do the Samaria Gorge as a tour (not independently). You have to get up early and the journey is very long - but it's worth it. We started from Heraklion and were picked up punctually at 6 a.m. Our guide was very friendly and in a good mood. However, we also saw some older people fighting in the gorge ... I think it's good to push your own limits - but you should have a basic level of fitness so that you can survive the 16 km well and have fun doing it.

Our guide Athena was very nice and motivated and always accompanied us with a smile. The gorge itself is spectacular and for me it was the best part of my week in Crete. (Whereby you have to plan for 2-3 days of sore muscles in your calves if you don't go hiking more often, so maybe something for the end of the holiday. It's not a walk, but really a hike). We didn't have any difficulties with the organization either. So all in all it was great :) I can only recommend it. PS: you can also book the tour on site, then it's a little cheaper. But it can also currently be due to the Corona situation that the prices on site were generally cheaper than online.

Idilia was a wonderful guide. She really explained well what to expect in the gorge. We love hiking and so we had a wonderful experience - the Samaria gorge is awesome. But we saw many people who didn't have the right footwear. You really need hiking shoes to do this gorge and walking sticks help as well. I'm an avid runner and yet by the end of the hike my ankles and knees were feeling it. I was wearing a solid pair of running shoes. my husband had hiking boots and he did much better. You are walking on stones and boulders throughout the 13 kilometres and its tough on the joints. I totally recommend this experience - the Samaria gorge is very much worth visiting and hiking but make sure you are prepared, you have the right footwear, that you are in reasonably good shape and you take your time.
