Full description
Start your Heraklion tour by indulging in a bite of bougatsa, the most traditional sweet in the city. From the owners’ mouths, you’ll hear the family story of how their business started, after their grandparents came as refugees to Heraklion from Smyrna, in Asia Minor. With your taste buds satisfied, follow the smell of aromatic Greek coffee to see it roasted the traditional way. The owner will explain the different techniques and varieties — so you can not only bring home the coffee, but also the recipe of how to brew it yourself!  Next up, walk through the open-air market, which locals know as “the old market” or simply “the market” (Agora). This used to be the central market of the city, with numerous stores on each side of the pedestrian street. Strolling further into the city, explore more modern shopping options. Stop at a one-of-a-kind shop that sells t-shirts, scarves, sarongs/pareo, bags and handmade jewelry, all made by Greek craftsmen and inspired by museum artifacts and ancient motifs. On the same street admire artwork-styled souvenirs from Greek designers. Take your time to check out the wide range of exquisite, 100% Greek products, from handmade diaries to games to decorative objects. Your next stop on your Heraklion shopping tour honors Crete’s beloved olive tree. The best known product of the olive tree is, of course, olive oil, and for which Crete is so famous. You will be able to browse for souvenirs like cosmetics made from olive oil and oil tree wood crafts.  After all that shopping go for a refreshing stop of homemade ice cream… made with olive oil, of course! It is dairy-free, sugar-free and lactose- and gluten-free, and very delicious! Last but not least, visit a ceramic artisan in his workshop. Inspired by Minoan models mixed with modern abstract art, he creates eco-friendly, non-toxic pieces right in front of you. Feeling artistic? He’ll let you try your hand at creating your own unique piece to bring back home. Your tour will end here, but if you’d like more inspiration for shopping or eating in the city, be sure to ask your local guide for some tips.

Shopping with a local

I tend to buy local products and bring them back home when I am traveling and this tour didn’t disappoint. My guide (I was the only traveler on the tour that day) Eva customized the tour to my interests and it was a wonderful walk tasting local products, talking to vendors (I even got local recipes from a grandma) and creating my own unique ceramic jewelry! I highly recommend this experience if you want to mingle with locals and buy made in Crete traditional products.

Do this tour on your first day

I am not a shopping addict but the description intrigued me to book this tour mostly to get my bearings around the city. I was so lucky as at the meeting point I realized that I was the only person booked for the tour on that day. Haras, if I am getting her name correct made me feel like a long time friend from the first minute. We ate the best pastry of my whole trip at a hole in the wall family owned restaurant, walked through the market which looked too touristic until we stepped into different little shops (learned all about the Greek coffee from a shop owner who patiently walked us through all the procedure) had a hands-on experience at a ceramic store, more tastings (olive oil-a local alcohol) and finally did indulge in buying some unique T-shirts with modern prints but based on ancient motifs. Overall this was one of the best tours I have ever done and highly recommend it.
