Full description
Discover the Imbros Gorge, which runs parallel to the more famous Samaria Gorge. Although the Imbros Gorge is smaller, many people prefer to cross here because it offers a very different hiking experience than the Samaria Gorge. Of the 11 kilometers, 8.5 kilometers are suitable for hiking. Discover the exquisite beauty of nature in this narrow passage and learn about the stunning rock formations.  According to legend, the name Imbros was given to the village, and subsequently the gorge, because two Greek brothers chose to live here after they were banished from Imbros Island when it was connected to Turkey. For many years, the Imbros Gorge served as part of the trail that connected the city of Chania to the Hora Sfakion village. It is notable that during World War II, after the Battle of Crete was lost by Greece and her allies, many thousands of British soldiers passed through the Imbros Gorge towards South Crete in order to get to Egypt.  After the hike, take a swim in the stunning refreshing Libyan sea. Eat lunch with the locals in the taverns.

Good bus, good guide and wonderful trip through the gorge. Slightly pressured schedule for bathing and taverna afterwards. Somewhat unclear Pick up time. GYG wrote at 5-7 before email from Rethymno Excursions, who said at 9. Confusion total when GYG subsequently sent new confirmation at 7 - We were picked up at 9….

The pickup from the pick up point worked great. Our tour guide also told us a few interesting things about the area on the way to the gorge. The hike and time approach to the meeting point, at the bottom of the gorge, was more than adequate. The route runs through a dry river bed, which is very rocky and slippery overall. After everyone had reached the meeting point, we went to the village of Chora Sfakion and then back to the pick up point. All in all a beautiful day with many impressions. We recommend

Guide was impressive in that she spoke 4 languages fluently. Even though it was a large tour bus, everyone spread out on the trail and we really had it to ourselves most of the time. But be forewarned that this is not an easy hike. You walk through a dry riverbed with loose rocks the entire way.
