Full description

Your full-day excursion to Samaria Gorge begins with pickup in Heraklion and a drive to Omalos, in the heart of the White Mountains. Enjoy breakfast before setting out on your challenging 10-mile (17 kilometer) hike.

The trek will take you over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river by fresh-water springs. Along the way, you’ll have spectacular views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range, and you are also likely to see mountain goats roaming in the wild. You will be accompanied by a professional mountain escort who speaks English, German and Greek. Your escort will be there to explain all the necessary information about your hike and provide you with the tickets for the entrance and ferry. After your breakfast you will enter the Samaria Gorge, where you can walk at your own pace as your guide waits at the end of the group to help you out if you need them. At the end of the trek you’ll visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops. You can enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. Late in the afternoon you’ll board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia, where your bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point.

The hike was a lot easier than we expected it to be. It is almost entirely downhill so you don't have to be in great cardiovascular health. But it can be hard on the feet, calves, hips - we were all very sore the next day. My sister ended up with bruised and blistered toes even with wearing very nice hiking boots. If you are prone to foot issues, consider wearing toes socks so your toes won't rub each other with the constant downhill strain. The biggest negative is the lack of time for people like us that like to enjoy the hike, take pictures, look at plants, explore the historic buildings. You have to keep moving to stay on schedule so there was only time for a few short snack and water breaks. We were staying in Heraklion so with the long bus drive we didn't start our hike until 10am. We wish we had hired a taxi on your own to get there earlier to start the hike at 7am. The bus ride was handy but honestly you do not need a guide.

Guide, transport and value for money were great. The gorge is really very beautiful. Great view and nature. However, it was very crowded. The route is definitely doable for a healthy person. You can refill water at the many small break stations. You can't buy food. If I remember correctly, there are toilets with rather difficult hygienic conditions at three stops. The bus ride from Agia Pelagia took just over two and a half hours. We were the last ones to be picked up. Others therefore drove even longer. All in all, I would recommend the trip if you don't mind the points mentioned above. The gorge is really incredibly beautiful.

The gorge was a new highlight at every corner. It had rained in our area and so the river was full, which further improved the experience of the gorge. But on the hike you have to be good on your feet, otherwise the risk of injury is quite high, especially at the beginning, as it is a steep descent with stony ground. Nevertheless, the hike is an absolute must for nature lovers
