Best and safest done with hiking shoes with good grip. Regular athletic shoes may not have enough grip or ankle support. We were quite dusty at the end of the trip, so a change of clothes would have been comfortable, especially after swimming in the water at the end. You'll need a lunch, but there was a short stop before the hike at a nice cafe that you can buy food and water/drinks at, not sure if they had sunscreen though. We saw people of all ages on that trail but everyone in good health with endurance. There's only one trail so it's hard to get lost. There's plenty of water fountains, you can probably get away with a single good sized water bottle that you keep refilling, we packed tons of water which ended up being excess weight we didn't need.

I really enjoyed the walk. It is downhill the entire way so it put a strain on my calves which I didn't feel till the next day. My phone said I walked 20 KMs in total. I took it slowly because the gorge is far more picturesque than the town at the end.

The Samaria Gorge hike is an all day activity involving a 16KM hike. We are in our 70's so were a little concerned but felt that we were in good enough condition to take this trip on. While it was strenuous it was well worth it. Mike, our guide did a wonderful job of explaining what to expect and when we needed to be at certain points on the trail. Having all the logistics of transportation and tickets taken care of was very helpful.
