Full description

Embark on a full-day guided trip to the Samaria Gorge from Chania. Arrive in Omalos in the heart of the White Mountains, and enjoy breakfast before trekking along the longest gorge in Europe — 4,000 feet above sea level.

After breakfast, enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace with your English speaking guide at the end of the group to help out if you need them.

Hike over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river, passing by fresh-water springs along the way. Enjoy views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range and see mountain goats roaming in the wild. Feel the exhilaration of challenging yourself with a long hike.

At the end of the trek, visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops. Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide.

Late in the afternoon you’ll board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sougia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point about 730 PM.

Informative and friendly guide and an enjoyable journey to the gorge. Loved that we were the first ones there so there wasn’t much of a crowd. The hike was beautiful and not as tough as I anticipated but it was a bit too long and felt like it went on forever. It does get quite repetitive after a while. If you walk/run a lot you will have no physical problems as it is a pretty easy hike, just watch your step as you can easily slip on the rocks. I’m glad I did it and got to enjoy the beach at the end of it. Would I do it again? No. Do I recommend? Yes.

It’s a beautiful hike! The tour makes the transportation very easy and comfortable since it is a long day excursion. I’m glad I wasn’t driving those roads! The bus driver was amazing! Our tour guide gave us great information on the way there. Hiking poles were very helpful and you could rent them from the guide if you don’t have your own.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience hiking the Samaria Gorge, and was one of the highlights of our trip. However, we felt like communication and transparency was lacking from our tour guide. At the start of our day, we stopped at a place for light breakfast that only took cash with very limited options. After that stop, we went to the start of the hike. At the entrance of the park, there was a cafe with tons of options, many were much more cost-effective with better food and drink options (and they took cards). We felt like there could have been better communication about the timing of the trip, what to expect after finishing the hike, etc. However, the rest was wonderful -- a truly breathtaking and worthwhile experience (it wasn't as gruling as some of these comments suggest -- just get ready to walk on rocks endlessly!).
