  • Admire the stunning natural beauty on the drive to the White Mountains
  • Visit the village of Agia Roumeli after the trek
Full description

Embark on a full-day guided trip to the Samaria Gorge from Chania. Arrive in Omalos in the heart of the White Mountains, and enjoy breakfast before trekking along the longest gorge in Europe — 4,000 feet above sea level.

After breakfast, enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace with your English and German-speaking guide at the end of the group to help out if you need them. Hike over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river, passing by fresh-water springs along the way. Enjoy views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range and see mountain goats roaming in the wild.

At the end of the trek, visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops. Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide. Late in the afternoon, board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sougia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point in the evening.

It was a great day, but very long (picked up 6am, dropped off 8:30pm) , and it was helpful to read the reviews beforehand as the itinerary was not given until that morning. The hike itself was cold in the morning (we went late Sept), was downhill a lot of the way, and took about 4-5hrs. So, I recommend layers and actual hikers as the first ~4km is rocky and all downhill. Then we had ~4hrs to enjoy the beach and have lunch before the return ferry at 5:30pm. So, pack beach gear and sandals to change into!

Thomas was excellent. communication was perfect. an early start is better as you are first to the gorge. buying tickets online means you don't get delayed in a queue. no joke wear the right footwear, it's very slippy. myself and my partner hiked it in 4.5hr including stops and our feet were very sore but all ok apart from that. we're moderate fitness. however we saw 2 people have a seizure after completing the hike so make sure to stay hydrated. take some snacks and the toilets are squat.

This is a tough hike because underfoot is rocky and stony most of the time, so despite it being relatively flat after the initial descent, it was slow going. Having said that the scenery is absolutely stunning throughout and makes every rock and stone worth it. Glad I brought my hiking boots though. Worth also bringing your swimming gear for a dip in the beautiful waters of the Libyan sea at the end. And I have to admit, we were very glad to see the bus outside the gorge going the last 2km to Agia Roumeli. At €2/head it was worth every penny! Two things to be aware of: 1) there is a stop for breakfast just before the gorge on the organised tours. It is not good, if possible, bring your own. The pastries have to have been days old and not of the highest quality to start with, and the coffee for me was undrinkable, though others did. 2) surprisingly there are toilets in the gorge. Don’t get too excited, they are really only for if you are absolutely completely desperate!
