Full description

Embark on a full-day guided trip to the Samaria Gorge from Chania. Arrive in Omalos in the heart of the White Mountains, and enjoy breakfast before trekking along the longest gorge in Europe — 4,000 feet above sea level.  After breakfast, enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace with your English speaking guide at the end of the group to help out if you need them. Hike over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river, passing by fresh-water springs along the way. Enjoy views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range and see mountain goats roaming in the wild. Feel the exhilaration of challenging yourself with a long hike. At the end of the trek, visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops. Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide. Late in the afternoon you’ll board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sougia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point about 7.30 PM.

  • This tour is very challenging with 17 kilometers of walking with some rocky terrain
  • At the time of booking please mention your hotel name and location. You will be notified by email about the pickup point and time
  • The 5 to 6-hour trek is challenging. You must have good trekking shoes or at least a sturdy pair of trainers
  • This trek is not recommended for children under the age of 6, pregnant women or anyone with health problems

Very difficult hike but very clearly and honestly explained by Thomas. All transport went smoothly except for the ferry but no fault of yours. Coach perhaps driven slightly slower but that’s a fear of mine

Beautiful views! The guide is excellent. However, I must note that the hike is quite difficult. I found it comparable to several of the steep hikes I have done e in Yosemite. For example, the beginning of the hike is comparable to 4 mile trail from glacier point down to the valley floor. The rest of the hike is “flat” but over loose stones. So it is a very technical and demanding hike. I would not recommend for anyone without good hiking gear and in very good condition.

Amazing scenery!! It was worth the effort. Trip was exactly as described: hard with hiking experience necessary. The length of it gets to you, wears down your muscles and joints by the end of it, even if you don’t find particularly challenging any part of the trek. The ground - varied but loose uneven stones predominated and made the trek challenging with risk of injuries. Hiking boots are necessary but I saw plenty of young people walking well in sneakers. My husband and I were really glad we had our worn, comfortable hiking boots on. We managed to keep ahead of the crowds and still had time to enjoy the amazing views and to take pictures. I did the trek in my 50’s, and can perfectly understand the guide’s advice: no one with knee issues should attempt it. One misstep, one wobbly step on uneven loose stones and you can flare up any small knee issue you have. I saw a person with obvious existing walking issues getting hurt on the hike. Our guide Thomas was great, knowledgeable, helpful
