Our tour guide, Claudia, was wonderful. Given the logistics involved in a trip like this, there’s potential for so much to go wrong but everything was slick and professional. Whether you think the hike itself is tough or easy obviously depends on your fitness and love for this sort of adventure. It will be a completely different experience for everyone. My friend, who has knee probelms, found the experience pretty excruciating but still managed to complete it and said she was glad to have gone. The scenery was beautiful and the trail wasn’t too busy after the first hour when everyone’s different paces meant the crowds thinned out. We went mid October and for me this was a perfect temperature for hiking, around 21 degrees celsius. There are toilets along the trail - pretty smelly and dirty - but I guess you just embrace the experience and let it be what it is. All in all a day very well spent.
Marcos was a great guide. I was traveling alone through Greece and wanted to do this hike but did not want to do it alone for safety reasons. This tour gave me the best of both worlds. The guide follows slowly behind everyone in the group and you can hike alone (or with the people you came with) but if something happens the guide will be able to help you when he catches up to you. The hike itself is beautiful but challenging, mostly because it it downhill most of the way and very rocky. But I loved it. The bus picks you up at a central location and takes you to the gorge. After the hike, you end up in a cute little village with plenty of time to eat, explore and lay out at the beach. Once you are done, you take a ferry back and then a bus ride home. This was well organized and a great overall experience. I highly recommend this tour and Marcos. Bonus: Marcos is very knowledgeable about the history of Crete and has lots of good info to impart!
