Full description
Enjoy breakfast at Rethymno, the first stop on this 17-hour Samaria Gorge excursion. Begin your trek at Xiloskalo, where you'll enter the vast, 18-kilometer canyon. Hike along a path that follows the route of the ancient Taras River. Admire the caves that formed a natural shelter for the Cretans in war times and now are home to wild goats. See the abandoned village of Samaria before reaching the Iron Gates, 3 kilometers before the end of the gorge. Rest and enjoy lunch (at your own expense) at the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli. Cool off with a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea before boarding the ship that takes you back to the village of Sfakia.

Mostly there’s not much thing we had to take care due our tour guide’s absolutely reliable professionalism. Also, pro tip to not bring many water bottle, ‘cause you can find fountains at certain rest areas and refill. Backpack, sportshoes recommended. Pay attention to the given map carefully! Have cash by yourself for tickets later!!

Landscape that is worth the detour. But as expected far too crowded in July and far too hot. To do out of season. For others, stop coming in Converse or Stan Smith, it's a real hike with 4km of slippery descent, and 16 km of stones .. and take a real backpack. We saw too many people with beach bags over their shoulders, that's nonsense. Regarding the tour, unfortunately the places where the bus stops to eat is really not that great. Provide a sandwich either.

Super exhausting, but it was worth it! But you really reach your limits. The first 4 km are super steep and slippery, then towards the end of 4 km come over small and large stones that are very shaky. I twisted my knees very often. In addition, these 4 km are almost only in the blazing midday sun. The view is really beautiful, but you have to be well equipped! Tip: take some cola or dextro and a banana with you to prevent / counteract hypoglycaemia. I really had my problems there. If you are used to something like that, it is certainly easier to do, but for the inexperienced I would recommend a shorter gorge up to 10 km.
