Learn about the history and gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and the Nazi concentration camps on a tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau from Krakow. An English-speaking driver will pick you up from a pre-arranged meeting point in Krakow and transfer you in a comfortable vehicle. Upon arrival at the Auschwitz Museum, a local guide will be provided in one of the five available languages or a booklet in over 12 languages, depending on the option booked. Visit both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau to acquire a proper sense of the place that has become the symbol of the Holocaust as well as Nazi crimes against Poles, Romas, and other groups. Become more educated about the UNESCO World Heritage Site as you visit the remaining prison blocks, gas chambers, and crematoria buildings. It was a place we always wanted to visit to pay our respects to the thousands who had lost their lives in such tragic circumstances but we were disappointed that we "rushed" and given little opportunity to take photos or stand for a few moments to imagine the horrific times that so many thousands of Jews had had to endure. Personally, we felt our guide was more interested in outlining the political side of what happened rather than explaining the circumstances of what the poor prisoners had to endure before being forced to carry out slave work -- or be put to death. For example - a better explanation of how families were selected to work or die, of their living quarters, the type of food they may or may not have been given, how they survived before being put to their deaths. It was too political and personally we didn't get the chance to pause for a moment to imagine ourselves in those horrendous conditions. We would have liked to have placed flowers or candles but sadly no chance

The pickup was uneventful and punctual, and the guided tour was fantastic. A break between the tours of Auschwitz and Birkenau would be welcome, since one can easily get hungry during this 7 hour activity. There were short breaks, and we were told they would be breaks of 15 minutes, but in reality they were longer (up to 30 minutes). Knowing the correct break time beforehand would be good to properly plan a short meal, for example. Unfortunately, expecting a 15 minutes break, we rushed to get some snacks into the stomach for no reason.

Info in advance and booking the excursion was really simple. Code on your phone works perfectly, the locals know about it and it's the most natural thing in the world for them. Departure from an easily accessible and clearly marked place and exactly on time. The Auschwitz guide tells her story with feeling, despite having told it countless times. The time allotted for Auschwitz 1 and 2 is sufficiently long.
