Full description

Explore the building that was the residence of the Christian monarchs and subsequently the site of the Courts of the Holy Offices, a civil prison, and finally a military prison. It stands atop the remains of the former caliph's palace. The Fortress is situated in the midst of magnificent gardens, which you’ll also visit on this 90-minute tour. See the Avenue of the Monarchs, featuring statues of all the monarchs who had connections to the palace-fortress. Declared a Historical Monument in 1931, the Fortress is also part of the area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. Since 1986, the gardens have been protected by town planning laws.

She took us through the Mesquita twice, as she explained, the first time to give the history of its founding and expansion as a mosque and the second time covering its conversion to a Christian place of worship. Wonderful tour, our guide was amazing and very knowledgeable. We got to see a lot of historic sites accompanied with interesting commentary from our guide. We had booked a guided tour of the Fortress of Catholic Monarchs, where among other things a certain Mr C Columbus first presented his plan to find a short cut to India ... Having a good guide gives you so much more than when you just walk around on your own. We even had the opportunity to get on another tour of the Mosque later that day - and if you have a chance to do that as well, go for it!
