I failed to negotiate the Ravennese Public Transport system initially, but that was a failing by me and Google Maps, not the location! If you don’t like churches and mosaics then to be honest Ravenna is not the place for you, and the church is a magnificent example of the mosaicists art. Being a bit of an anorak about the historical era from 300-600AD helps of course. The church was commenced under the Ostrogoths (Arian Christians) but finished after conquest by the Byzantines (Orthodox/Chalcedonian Christians). The interplay of the two species of Christianity in the city is a really interesting theme when exploring the sites. Reflect on the fact that Classe was a major port then; now it’s a sleepy village! The Museum is not close and had to walk there but sadly did not have enough time to explore it as fully as we should - I was booked to another site in the afternoon, again mismanagement by me. Leave plenty of time to explore the museum - it is fascinating.
