History of the Cristo Redentor

Today the Cristo Redentor ("Christ the Redeemer") statue is the symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil and one of the 7 Wonders of the World, but there was a time when the massive Art Deco rendering of Christ overlooking the city was only a dream of the people.

The Perfect Mountain

The Perfect Mountain

Building a large Christian statue atop the Corcovado (“hunchback” in Portuguese) first became an idea in 1850 as a monument to Princess Isabel, but the project was put on hold.

Statehood

Statehood

Brazil became a republic in 1889, but with the new separation of church and state the idea was abandoned. It would be another 30 years until another proposal.

A Statue for the People

A Statue for the People

In 1920 the giant population of Brazilian Catholics collected signatures and raised donations under the name of "The Catholic Circle of Rio."

Choosing the Image

Choosing the Image

There was much debate: the Christian cross, a statue of Jesus with a globe in his hands... but in the end the Christ opening his arms over the city was chosen as a symbol of peace.

Designing an Icon

Designing an Icon

It was an incredible architectural endeavor designed by local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, sculpted by France’s Paul Landowski and the face etched by Romania’s Gheorghe Leonida.

Bus arrived on time. Our guide Bruno was very clear and informative throughout the tour, taking photos for people / groups etc. We were given just about the right time to explore each of the sights given how much was packed into the day. Lunch was at a Rodizio and was excellent, well above what I expected. Minivan was very clean and videos were played about the next venue as we drove there, as well as Bruno pointing out landmarks as we passed by them. An excellent tour and good value for money.

This tour was awesome! It shows the essential highlights of what to see in Rio. From the must see Christ the Redeemer statue, to the iconic Selaron Steps, to the sweet views of the Sugarloaf mountain, etc. you wont be disappointed. Plus the lunch buffet will fill you up with many varieties of local & Western foods to enjoy. Also our guide Manuela is very informative, fun & she provided really good customer service.

Rio de Janeiro: 6-Stop Highlights of Rio with Lunch Reviewed by

A very well-run day and a great introduction to Rio. We managed to see everything we wanted, despite having to adapt the schedule due to cloudy weather in the morning. The guide Renato was very friendly and interesting, with perfect English and Portuguese. The lunch was fantastic at an authentic steakhouse next to Copacabana!

Leondre, which i dont know if im spelling right, was a fantastic guide. I'm not one for sitting around for tourist sites but it was the perfect amount of time for me. Not sure how leondre was able to keep up the Energy but he did somehow. It was a great day to me!!

The whole trip was very professionally organised and Felipe was great. It was really interesting to tour around for the day and our lunch restaurant was excellent value for money.
