History of the Cristo Redentor

Today the Cristo Redentor ("Christ the Redeemer") statue is the symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil and one of the 7 Wonders of the World, but there was a time when the massive Art Deco rendering of Christ overlooking the city was only a dream of the people.

The Perfect Mountain

Building a large Christian statue atop the Corcovado (“hunchback” in Portuguese) first became an idea in 1850 as a monument to Princess Isabel, but the project was put on hold.

Statehood

Brazil became a republic in 1889, but with the new separation of church and state the idea was abandoned. It would be another 30 years until another proposal.

A Statue for the People

In 1920 the giant population of Brazilian Catholics collected signatures and raised donations under the name of "The Catholic Circle of Rio."

Choosing the Image

There was much debate: the Christian cross, a statue of Jesus with a globe in his hands... but in the end the Christ opening his arms over the city was chosen as a symbol of peace.

Designing an Icon

It was an incredible architectural endeavor designed by local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, sculpted by France’s Paul Landowski and the face etched by Romania’s Gheorghe Leonida.

What People Are Saying About Christ the Redeemer

Poor arrangement and notification of changes

If I had not enquired I wouldn't have known changed time. Weather was awful. No point in going up at all least of all to keep changing times.

Great tour with knowledgeable and nice tour-guide Alexander.

Group comprised of 3 businessmen who have travelled to RJ several times for meetings without seeing anything of the city. Alexander of c2rio organized a fantastic tour including the main spots. Alexander was flexible (early pick-up due to evening flight, late lunch), yet super realiable. Tour was in a modern and clean SUV. Alexander is very knowledgeable on RJ, Brazil and its people (history, culture, living, etc.) and fluent in several languages (Portuguese, English, German). I highly recommend c2rio and Alexander and will book him again when we have our next business trip to RJ.

An intimate and informative tour of rio in one day

We were able to see more of Rio's greatest sites in one day than most people do in a week. This tour is for those who do not have a lot of time in the city but would like to cover a lot of ground. I am an active adventurous person so the climbing from place to place was a great balance amongst the driving portions of the tour. Edmundo was a helpful and informative guide who was more than willing to answer all of our questions and offer a complete picture of his city. Do bring a snack or be prepared to buy one as lunch comes quite late in the day.

We saw everything we wanted to see in the day.

The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. He was able to answer all my questions satisfactorily. The tour itself was everything I hoped it would be and more. Would recommend to anyone visiting the city.
