Fes: Historical and Cultural Sightseeing Tour - half day

Fes: Historical and Cultural Sightseeing Tour - half day

Enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour in Fes, which is the oldest of Morocco’s four “Imperial Cities”. One of the most famous buildings is that of the University of Al Kairaouine, also written as al-Quaraouiyine and al-Qarawiyyin (in Arabic: جامعة القرويين). It was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859. It is considered by some to be the oldest degree-granting university in the world. The university doubles as a functioning mosque and non-Muslim visitors are not allowed inside the grounds. The main gates and some other entrances are open and may be looked into, but not entered. The medieval city of Fes El Bali or “Old Fes” remains complete and is unspoiled. During your tour of this part of the town, you can visit the exotic Bou Inania Medersa, again from the outside, Dar Bath in the medina, which is a former palace turned into a museum in 1915, with an amazing collection of traditional artefacts. It has a fantastic Andalusian-style garden at its entrance, with varying types of plants, aromas, and sounds, plus mosaics and a water fountain. Inside, you’ll find fine woodcarvings, Moroccan tiles, embroidery, carpets, and even a ceramic collection from the 14th century. Fes is also famous for the tanneries, though you might wish to have a scarf to cover your nose as the smell can be very strong. But the leatherwork is often exquisite and can be found all over the medina. The Dar Al Mekhzen is the entrance to the Royal Palace and the workmanship and precision of the gigantic doors made of brass and gold, surrounded by zellij tilework and carved cedar wood is stunningly beautiful.

youssef was very professional and though us a lot of curiosities about the medina as a person born and raised in there. He was always available to answer our questions and explain to us cultural stuff. The tour was very complete and without him we would have had a lot more trouble finding the places! The tour also includes some stops in shops where we are though about the craftmanships and the artisanal process, where we can also buy stuff if we want to. Thanks Majid for your good service!

We had a great tour this morning. Very informative and approachable and shared lots of interesting information anbout Fes. Open to questions about both Fes and general culture. He was very attentive, taking us to alternative locations that we requested. We asked to visit a few shops and he waited with us. Highly recommend taking this tour, it’s definitely worthwhile! Mohamed was a excellent guide and phenomenal human 👏 ❤️ you can tell when someone truly loves what they do. He explained his city with such passion. He answered all of our questions and showed us some places that other guides do not show you. I highly recommend this tour!! the medina is huge with over 10,000 alleyways but with him you will find yourself viewing all the highlights and then some.

Rachid is an excellent tour guide! He is on time, knowledge, kind and definitely knows the history of the Medina and the city of Fes. I highly recommend this experience!!

The tour was great, very informative and took us to many great places we would never have found by ourselves throughout this incredible maze.
