From Bogotá: Chingaza National Park Eco Tour

The tour begins at 7:00 AM in the reception of your hotel or accommodation. If you wish we can make a short stop in the town of La Calera to buy something that catches your attention or something to eat. Then head to Chingaza National Park, located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, northeast of Bogotá. Chingaza National Park is a natural and cultural treasure, the magic of its mountains keeps secrets and thoughts inherited from the Muiscas and Guayupes, indigenous peoples who guarded this territory, as well as peasant communities that inhabited the region less than 40 years ago. Today it is a refuge for the fauna and flora of the Andes that reveal to the visitor the secret of life. It was created in May 1977. The park has an extension of 76,600 hectares and heights between 800 and 4,050 meters above sea level. It has warm and cold temperatures and moor climates. It includes ecosystems as varied as wetlands, jungles, and humid forests. The temperature ranges between 4 and 21.5 °C. At the entrance of the natural reserve, our local guide will be waiting for you, who will guide us along the Rincón del Oso Trail, which begins at the Piedras Gordas Control Post inside the Park. It is a beautiful high Andean forest trail for the appreciation of native flora and fauna. The guide will take you through the trails and paths of this paradise. If we are lucky, we will be able to appreciate the spectacled bears and deer that inhabit the area. The tour lasts 3 or 3.5 hours depending on your resistance. The tour will end with an incredible view of the mountain before returning to the city of Bogotá.

Chingaza: The Mountain of Water

Chingaza: The Mountain of Water

Chingaza is one of the most impressive natural parks of Colombia. Located right at the east of Bogotá at an altitude of  3400 meters above sea level, it's among 7,66 hectares of virgin high Andean forest sub-paramo and paramo ecosystems.  The Paramos play a key role in the big scale balance of earth.  Endemic to the Andes region, they are a kind of highland wetlands and perform the task of a giant geographical sponge. It is the place where the clouds are constantly being condensed, and where the streams coming from the glaciers are retained and regulated. This park offers a network of hiking trails where visitors will be in close contact with its unique flora species like Frailejón Uribei, a bush that grows only at the Paramos at a speed of 1/3 of an inch per year, and more than 1,000 other native species. The park also has 186 documented species of birds and a handful of native mammals like deer, Andean bears, and small felines.   The trip starts at 7:00 AM from your hotel in Bogotá. Your driver and English speaking guide (optional, see inclusions for details) will meet you at your hotel and you will start a 1.5 hour drive towards the east of the capital. Half way along the way, you'll make a stop at La Calera, and have a taste of the nationally acclaimed arepas boyasenses with tinto (a softer version of Americano). After clearing the national park entrance permit (all arranged in advance by DestinoBogota) you will be introduced to the local guide who will be with you along the hike. The guides are native of this region and have a deep knowledge of flora and fauna, and will point at the most interesting aspects of the rout and tell you anecdotes related to the native cultures and traditional farming communities of the area. The hike lasts about 3 hours and reaches a lagoon called Laguna de Buitrago. After the hike, you will return to the cabin and have a comforting agua de panela (hot drink made with sugar cane jaggery). Here you can use the toilet facilities and change to warm and dry clothes and shoes (bring a spare change of clothes because the chances of getting wet are very high). Thereafter, the guide and driver will bring you back to your hotel or any other point of the city at lunchtime.

The hike I went on (and they have a couple to choose from) went up above 3900 m and was a great chance to see a unique ecosystem. The region has fascinating plants that help to gather water from mists that would otherwise just blow over. Not something one sees every day! There was a pickup from my hotel in Bogota by the guide and a driver with a suitable car, and then we picked up an Indigenous guide from the area on the way in La Calera - he knows every path through the park superbly well (he didn't speak English but the other guide did and could translate). A unique day and a highlight of my trip to Colombia. (They aren't joking about the possibility of getting wet - even without rain, and on a high path, there was some walking over marshy surfaces where one could get one's feet wet - do take appropriate clothing for the hike and possibly to change).

Amazing hike! Lorena and Natalia (an Indigenous guide) were AMAZING! Emilio was a great driver. Such a unique ecosystem. Thoroughly enjoyed! My only suggestion is to wear waterproof hiking boots that go past the ankle. The trail and other areas can be quite wet. Such an AMAZING day!

What a perfect way to spend a day in Colombia. The hike through Chingaza was both beautiful and informative. The guides were wonderful, they knew so much and set a perfect pace. My husband and I both highly recommend this.

I had an amazing time with Maurice, Natalia and Manuel and I learned a lot about this important ecosystem. Highly recommended

the nature is wonderful and our guides were great. They led us through the park with a lot of fun. Absolutely recommended :)
