Full description
Depart Chiang Mai and journey into the mountains of northern Thailand to visit the ethical Lanna Kingdom Elephant Sanctuary (approximately 1-hour drive from the city center). Upon arrival, learn about the elephant conservation program and benefit from an introductory talk and the chance to interact with the rescued animals. Get the chance to give them a hug and discover how to prepare a healthy meal to feed them. Go for a walk around the sanctuary with the elephants and stop to give them a mud bath to keep their body temperature down and protect them from parasites. I was nervous of if this sanctuary was truly ethical, but it's very clear that these elephants are well-cared for, and that we are there simply to observe and enjoy them. Our guide also taught us a lot about elephants in general, and gave us a lot of fun insights into the personalities of the specific elephants we were spending time with. The logistics around the experience were also great (convenient transportation, change of clothes/shower, and a nice vegetarian lunch.)

Prepare to have your life changed after spending a day with these magnificent creatures. I really wanted to find the most ethical way to visit elephants, and this was definitely the right choice. Alex was an excellent tour guide, helping us cut up some trees and prepare vitamin treats for feeding. He introduced us to every single one, along with their back story. Wallow in the mud with them, scrub them down, and of course, give them all the food they want. Pure magic.

A wonderful experience. The animals clearly feel good, are not forced to do anything and live in harmony with their keepers. Everything promised - feeding, bathing, getting to know the animals exactly, arrival and departure as well as snack - was exactly as described. We would highly recommend the tour to anyone.
