Cholamandal Artists' Village came into existence in 1966 and is just 9 kilometers from the city of Chennai, situated in the southern outskirts of Tamil Nadu. It is well dispersed over an area of 8 acres on the Muttukadu Road and serves as the abode of extremely talented and proficient artists who make a living out of manufacturing exquisite works of art.

The Cholamandal Artists' Village of Chennai started with just 40 graduates who emerged from the Arts and Crafts College of Madras and has been transformed into a hugely successful institution. It is administered by an annually elected council of members.

Painters and sculptors live as a community and pool their skills. They also run the Artists Handicrafts Association, a cooperative which manages the village and sale of works through the permanent exhibition at the complex, including paintings, sketches, terracotta/stone/metal sculptures, batiks, and handicrafts made by the artists living in the village, making the village a self-supporting entity.

Granite, wood, metals such as copper and bronze are the medium in use for sculpting. Paintings of gods and goddesses and other subjects of modern art in vivid pastels, oils, graphic prints, a mixture of ink and water colors, with the backdrop of canvas or wood are predominant. Today, the village houses a number of art galleries and museums, and an open-air theatre on the site also houses dance and theatre performances.

In the afternoon you will return to your hotel in Chennai. After a wonderful tour of the village you can take home pleasant and unforgettable memories of your journey to Chennai.
