Take a full-day tour of Chennai, India's 4th-largest city and a centre of its culture and history. Our tour includes stops at places such as St. George Fort, Kapaleeshwar Temple and Santhome church, before enjoying an enchanting sunset on Marina Beach.
What to Expect
Our day begins with pick-up from your hotel in Chennai at 08:30 to get our city tour started. Situated on the banks of Bay of Bengal, Chennai was a major trade port during the British rule and thus houses various colonial time monuments as well. Today, it is the fourth largest city in India.
Our first stop will be St. George Fort (closed on Fridays), located on the banks of Bay of Bengal. It was built by the British East India Company in 1640, and is believed to be the first establishment of British in India.
It is a military architecture marvel, which was erected as a trading post and later evolved to be the origin of modern Indian Army. Today, it serves as the administrative headquarters of the legislative assembly of the state of Tamil Nadu.
Take some time once inside the fort to visit its most popular landmarks, including St. Mary's Church, Museum, Wellesley House and Clive House.
Our next stop will be the Santhome Church, built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, and rebuilt again with the status of a cathedral by the British in 1893.
From there, we will head to the Kapaleeshwar Temple, a temple of Shiva located in Mylapore, a suburb of Chennai. The temple was built around the 7th century and is an impressive example of Dravidian architecture.
Our next stop will be the Government Museum and Art Gallery, one of India’s best museums and one of its main tourist attractions besides the popular temples and monuments.
The Government Museum has a treasure trove of artifacts and other invaluable historical objects from the Chola, Hoysala, Vijayanagar and Chalukya dynasties. The National Art Gallery features a fine collection of paintings, handicrafts and bronze artifacts.
In the evening, we will visit Marina Beach, where guests can relax and unwind after a day of exploring this bustling and fascinating city.
The famous Marina Beach, the pride of Chennai, is second longest beach in the world with a length of 4.5 km (2.5 miles) and with golden sand and clear blue water.
Watching sunset or sunrise from the beach is a classic experience in this city. You can also see the statues of heroes from Tamil culture to Samadhis of great leaders like Anna and MGR here. An aquarium is also located on the Marina Beach.
Try out some of the local south Indian delicacies for dinner as per your preference, before returning to your Hotel.
