History at the Touchpoint of East and West Berlin

For 28 years, Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin. It was site of many tense historical moments between Soviet and American forces, and it remains a symbol of the Cold War to this day.

Building The Wall

By 1961, 20% of East Germany’s population had immigrated to the West, causing economic loss to the Soviet Union. So, on August 13th, the Wall and its “death strip” was built.

The Checkpoint

Checkpoint C was the only Berlin crossing point for Allied forces and foreigners. The West built a small wooden house at the location so it wouldn't appear as an official border.

U.S.-Soviet Standoff

Soon after the Wall's construction, the U.S. and Soviet armies had a faceoff, with tanks pointed at one another for six days. It ended peacefully when the Soviets withdrew.

The Death of Peter Fechter

A teenager bled to death near the Checkpoint after being shot by East German guards while trying to escape to the West. Neither side went to his aid out of fear of retribution.

The Fall of The Wall

The Wall fell on November 9th, 1989. Although reunification didn't occur until a year later, open travel at Checkpoint Charlie began. The guard house was removed in October 1990.

What People Are Saying About Checkpoint Charlie

Worth it for the return train travel from airport to city centre alone

Perfect for taking advantage of Berlin's excellent integrated public transport. Simple to book in advance and collect on arrival at airport. Only slight criticism is there can be queues at the collection point (at airport).

Good tour - The bus is the black and white one and route maps on bus

Good tour - only two comments: It wasn't clear from the voucher that the bus we booked was the black and white one (there are several companies operating so a photo would have been good). Also, it was hard to get a route map online to select the nearest bus stop to hotel. All staff very friendly. Pick your guide.

Whizzing around on a Segway is more fun than you can imagine. Combine that with a very friendly city, loads of interesting places to see and a guide who really made the experience the best of our entire trip. Walid was hilarious and very knowledgeable. He really was a wonderful host and I can't recommend his tour highly enough. Fantastic!

Excellent clues, brill way to see the sights and lots of fun.

The service we received was outstanding, the pack was delivered to my hotel in Berlin, following my requests for this to be done via email. The clues were very clear and the box they came in was robust. The clue cards themselves were very professional and I really impressed with the whole product.
