  • Discover Fontainebleau, one of the largest French Royal Castles
  • Learn all about the history of the castle and its inhabitants, from Marie Antoinette to the Napoleons
Full description
Get priority entrance to Fontainebleau, the only royal and imperial château to have been continuously inhabited for eight centuries. On top of exploring chapels, galleries and guest apartments which would have been used by French and visiting royalty, you will see Marie Antoinette's bed, Napoleon's throne, François Gérard's 1807 portrait of Empress Josephine and more! Wander through over 1500 rooms and 130 acres of parkland and gardens, including the the French Renaissance garden, inspired by the Italian Renaissance gardens; the French formal garden, the favorite style of Louis XIV; and the French landscape garden, inspired by the English landscape garden. You will discover the garden of Diane and the English garden, landscaped gardens in the English style. The classic Grand Parterre by André Le Nôtre (1660-1664), and its 14 hectares of French-style garden, Louis XIV's favorite style, offers a totally different experience of space and perspectives. It is extended, beyond the Cascades basin, by a long park through which the Grand Canal of Henri IV crosses. You can also visit the Napoleon I museum and the Grand Apartments of the castle and discover the feeling of having been a king or a queen having grown up there.

The Chateau itself is beautiful and worth seeing. The public transportation from Paris is quite long. Depending where you are staying you will need to get to the Gare De Lyon station and then it's a 50 minute train ride. Once in Fontainebleau, you must take a bus which is another 10 minute ride. The total time from our hotel to the Chateau was 2 hours. There is also no "priority entrance" ticket however the lines were not long to enter.

We opted to stay to see the lower floor exhibits and we were very glad we did! Here you see the children’s rooms and Marie Antoinette’s preferred living space. While the main floor was opulent, the lower floors were endearing, charming and worth the time. Crowds are terrible and people are very rude, often walking in front of you with no regard for your presence. So, take your Zen skills with you! The guide was knowledgeable and personable. He talked the entire hour, which became tiresome. The coordination at the onset was not well done, There was confusion about where to stand and wait, who your guide was and if they were even present, and exactly what time we were supposed to arrive. We arrived 15 minutes before our tour time, but it turned out that the tour time was actually another 25 minute wait (1:45 ticket; 2:10 entry). Leave time to tour the expansive gardens. They are enormous! The fountain display was not as artistic as expected; rather uninspired. Good overall. Enjoy!

Awesome site! Don't forget to see Napoleon's bathtub at the end of the tour. The only downside about this site is parking. It would be helpful if the site had a lot or more information about how to park. It was metered, and it was difficult to figure out in another language.
