Full description

This tour begins at the Big Red Barn in downtown Charleston, where you'll meet a knowledgeable driver-guide and settle into a carriage drawn by either horses or mules.

Follow a route that takes in some of the historic downtown district’s most elegant mansions and gardens, learning about the architecture of each place as you drive along. Catch the scent of jasmine flowers from deep, shady porches, and pass by rows of bristling palmetto trees.

Get an overview of Charleston’s dramatic history, from long-ago pirate raids to plantations, Revolutionary battles, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. The city was founded in 1670, and Charleston's historic buildings have been meticulously preserved and restored.

Guides combine humor with history for a lighthearted experience of Charleston’s atmospheric center, and you'll cover between 25 and 30 blocks of the downtown district. This tour concludes with drop-off at the Big Red Barn.

After our flight from California was canceled at 11:15 am in Dallas, we didn’t make it to Charleston until 1:00 pm on Saturday. That meant we missed our tour but the owner was very gracious and allowed us to go on a tour on Sunday morning. We’re so appreciative. On the tour, I loved hearing about the churches, the silent bells used for ammunition, the light blue ceilings to fend off ghost, and some other local stories. Ian did a good job of entertaining all of us!

We enjoyed the tour very much. The online reservation process was easy and very well organized as we arrived for our tour. Our horse Buddy provided a smooth ride. Our guide Sean was friendly and very knowledgeable. We learned so much about the history of Charleston and seeing the sights from the comfort of the carriage . We recommend this tour for all, especially first time visitors.

Scott was our guide. Elwood was our horse. Scott was a great guide in our tour of Charleston with some little jokes along the way that kept us all continually smiling. Scott was very knowledgeable about the history of Charleston making sure we all could see. It made our family do a lot more walking and looking up at the historical Architectural designs later that day. We took many pictures because of Scott. We also bought books that he had talked about on the tour. Our family loves history and books. I truly was impressed by the he communicated with Elwood with only a word or a sound. You could tell these two had a long standing horse/friend relationship, which is truly rare. I recommend personally that they always be paired together.
