From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

8. From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst (limestone) monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close.  A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries, and halls, an astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for the popularity of the cave and the large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years). The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious, and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance of the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best-known and most notorious owner – Erazem of Predjama.  The legend of the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his that helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year. Let your guide take you through these unforgettable sights for an ideal day excursion.

I recently took a full day tour visiting Postjama Castle, Postojna Cave, and Lake Bled and I have to say, it was an excellent tour. The price of the tour was more expensive than other tours, but it was worth it because the entry tickets for Postojna Cave and Posjama Castle were included. One of the best things about the tour was that there was only a group of two and the guide, so we practically had a private tour. We went with a personal car and the guide was very informative and talked about various different topics that exceeded the coverage we expected. On the way to Lake Bled, we stopped in a small village and had a delicious lunch at a local restaurant with authentic Slovenian cuisine. I would highly recommend the Deer Steak. The only disadvantage of booking the tour in the winter months is that daylight is shorter. Overall, I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Slovenia and looking for a comprehensive and enjoyable experience

The package to visit the cave and the castle are well planned. The pickup was punctual, the pickup point was very close to the hotel and clear directions were given regarding the pick up point. Our tour guide Mr Valdamir was excellent, he made the journey such an memorable experience. It was a fun trip, hearing the stories, history of Slovenia and some insights into the life in Slovenia . I would blindly recommend the trip, and if you are lucky with the same tour guide we had it will become a unforgettable experience.

We absolutely loved this tour!! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and being a small group of only 4 of us meant there was flexibility for people to do their own thing. The caves and castle are absolutely incredible and worth paying the extra money to visit (entry fee not included in tour). Then we set off to Bled and caught a pretna boat to the island, again ticket not included but worth the experience. Bled castle was interesting but very different to Predjama!

We loved our tour and our guide was super knowledgeable. The pace was a little fast and we did have a phone representative who was not helpful to the point of rude. However, our guide was so great we were willing to look passed that

Memorable experience. It is really worth visiting this picrurisque scenery.
