Catacomb of St. Callixtus and Appian Way: Guided Tour

1. Catacomb of St. Callixtus and Appian Way: Guided Tour

Traveling by bus and on foot, this 3-hour guided tour takes you beyond the city walls of Rome, through the ancient tunnels of the city’s catacombs. You will travel along the rustic Appian Way, and under the arches of the aqueducts of antiquity. Constructed nearly 2,000 years ago as the burial chambers for early Christians, the catacombs reveal burial niches, mosaics, and sarcophagi, as well as ancient religious drawings While in San Callisto, explore the Crypt of the Popes, and view some of the very earliest Christian art. As Christianity became more popular in Rome, it became necessary to find a system for the burial of large of numbers of people, the majority of whom lacked money to pay for elaborate tombs and mausoleums. The solution was found in the friable tufa rock around the city. From the 2nd through to the 5th-Centuries, 60 catacomb complexes were dug, each occupying several layers, and 2 of which were designated for Jews. Out of the total number of catacombs, 5 of the Christian complexes regularly open to the public, giving you a unique perspective on Ancient Rome, in an environment that you will never see in the city center.

Extremely interesting trip. The catacombs are a must do in Rome on my opinion. The via appia is also very interesting and a beautiful place to visit because you get to see the beautiful surroundings of Rome.. Both guides were very competent and nice. The tour operator is of very good quality. The only thing I really didn't appreciate: Although it is written in the tour description that they allow enough social distance to avoid covid infection we were squeezed in a small van with closed windows!! The van did not have one empty seat left and I had to insist that they open the window. This was not correct!

Well organised, small vans, friendly, informed and good humoured guide. As I can't walk for long distances, the travel between each venue enabled me to sit and gather energy! The guide had clearly studied his information but I was a little surprised that he did not mention that the apostle Paul was welcomed to Rome near that section of the Appian Way, by believers from Rome who came out to meet him (Acts 28:15).

Marcello was a super guide--very knowledgeable and organized. Unfortunately, the weather was too cold and rainy for me to walk the Appian Way (several of us stayed on the bus while he walked with the few hardy ones). He made the history of the catacombs come alive!

Outstanding and interesting tour. Excellent guide who filled us with info almost constantly. She took us to original Appian way which was very interesting.

Enjoyed the Tour with Magda

Magda was a great tour guide and we enjoyed the Catacombs and Appian Way. She is very knowledgeable and was willing to answer all our questions.
