Full description
Discover the ancestral and underground area of Rome on a fascinating tour of exploring several burial chambers and various pagan burial sites. Rome has some of the oldest and longest burial underground tunnels in the world, hundreds of kilometers of catacombs run underneath the town and its outskirts. Depending on different closing days, visit either the Catacombs of Domitilla, the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian, the Catacombs of Priscilla, or the Catacombs of St. Callixtus.

The Catacombs of St. Callixtus is the largest and oldest underground cemetery in Rome and the official cemetery of the Church of Rome where half a million Christians were buried among the many martyrs and popes at the Crypt of the Popes. The Crypt of St. Cecilia, the popular patron saint of music, is also entombed where the statue now lies.

The Catacombs of Domitilla has one of the most extensive catacombs in Rome spread over 17km of underground caves, some of which are inaccessible as they are situated over 16m underground. The catacombs in the Ardeatina area were built after Domitilla had been banished in the 3rd century.

At the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian there are about 150,000 burials situated in Via Appia. These are particularly important because historians believe this to be place that hosted Saint Peter’s and Saint Paul’s bodies.

The Catacombs of Priscilla are one of the most ancient and the first burials go back to the second half of the 2nd century AD. This cemetery was ransacked around the 16th century so there are no tombstones or coffins, but nevertheless there are many well-preserved paintings.
