Rome: Catacombs of St. Sebastian Entry Ticket & Guided Tour

Rome: Catacombs of St. Sebastian Entry Ticket & Guided Tour

The place where the Catacomb of San Sebastiano stands was in ancient times a deep depression, used as a pozzolana quarry and called ad catacumbas (or “near the cavities”), a name that has become synonymous with an underground cemetery. Since the first century, the site has been intensely exploited and built: the underground galleries were reused to obtain burial niches, on the surface, however, several columbaria were built and at least two residential systems (the so-called small villa and large villa) equipped with remarkable pictorial wall decorations. Around the middle of the second century, the bottom of the valley was buried to create a pitch, on one side of which three mausoleums were built in succession (by Clodius Hermes, by the Innocentiores, by the Ax). A further burial of the area was made to give space to the construction of the triclia, a portico bordered by a wall on which numerous graffiti invocations addressed to the SS. Peter and Paul, who were venerated together in this place around 250. On the site, then, the emperor Constantine (306-337) had a basilica in the shape of a Roman circus (called "circiforme"). Meanwhile, already in the third century, the catacomb that housed the tombs of the martyrs Sebastian and Eutichio began to develop underground.

Rome: Catacombs of Priscilla Entry Ticket & Guided Tour

Rome: Catacombs of Priscilla Entry Ticket & Guided Tour

Located on Via Salaria, the catacomb is spread over two floors and probably takes its name from a Priscilla of the Acili senatorial family, whose name occurs in one of the inscriptions of the hypogeum of the Acili on the first floor. Its origin is different from that of the other catacombs as initially the place was an arenarium, then abandoned. Christians began to use the large and irregular galleries that make up the first floor of the catacomb towards the beginning of the third century, building around twenty niche tombs and digging hundreds of niches in the walls. In an adjacent area there is the cryptoporticus with the Greek Chapel and a large underground environment, born as a noble family burial ground and then connected to the catacomb. Among the martyrs buried in Priscilla we remember the brothers Felice and Filippo, who were martyred, probably under Diocletian, together with their mother St. Felicita and the other five brothers Alessandro, Marziale, Vitale, Silano and Gennaro. Numerous popes were also buried in Priscilla: Marcellino (296-304), Marcello (308-309), Silvestro (314-335), Liberius (352-366), Siricius (384-399), Celestino (422-432) and Vigilius (537-555). In the hypogeum of the Acili, originally a cistern of water, the inscriptions of the Acili have been found and exhibited. Inside Villa Ada there is the Basilica built by Pope St. Silvestro in correspondence with the tomb of Felice and Filippo. In an area near the basilica a Museum has been set up which collects hundreds of fragments of sarcophagi found during the excavations in the area of the catacomb.

This was one of the most entertaining and informative tours we did in our five days in Rome. And it was great value for money, too. The guide, Mike, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his subject and revealed many fascinating facts and anecdotes about the history of the catacombs. I would highly recommend choosing the tour of the Catacombs of Domitilla and would insist that the best guide to choose would be Mike. The location of the Domitilla Catacombs might appear to be some distance from the centre of the city, but don’t let that put you off. There are numerous buses that take you almost to the entrance to the site and a taxi rank just down the road from the site. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Rome.

Our guide was amazing and handled the inevitable bike issues as quickly as possible. It was so wonderful to get out of the busyness of the city and into the countryside! We learned so much more of the history of the city.

Our guide was absolutely brilliant the information, its delivery and her driving ! Could not have been better !!! We loved it 😁🙌

Veronica our tour guide was really friendly and knowleable, the tour aroun was beautiful and very nice. Thank you!

francesca provided a great tour and helped us learn so much about the Catacombs
