Full description
The Castle of the Moors was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and it also forms part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 1995. It soars 412 m above sea level and looms high above the surrounding forest.  The 10th-century Moorish castle’s dizzying ramparts stretch across the mountain ridges and past moss-clad boulders the size of small buses. The best walking route here from Sintra-Vila is not along the main road but the quicker, partly off-road route via Rua Marechal Saldanha. The steep trail is around 2 km, but quiet and rewarding.  Once you reach the castle, the views over Sintra’s palace-dotted hill, across to the glittering Atlantic are breathtaking. Along the walkways, you can admire the unique landscape that in the foreground features Sintra town and its town hall, the Palace of Pena and the hills. In the background, admire the extensive plain running northwards and the Atlantic Ocean.

superb panoramas, a splendid view, a great adventure to do with children a little older than mine (6/9 years old) and unfortunately dad did not support the altitude well. the schedules were not up to date, after more than 45min of waiting someone who was not very pleasant arrived without a word. in short, it was not the visit of the day. then there are no or so few explanations that it is a silent visit.

The walls are very easy to reach by bus 434 (€6.90 return), but also by car (there are only a few parking spaces available, there were still many free). From the car park/bus stop you have to walk about 5 minutes. There are many steps in the walls. You should therefore not be a bit fit :) The view rewards you for the many steps

Super easy with the ticket on the phone. Absolutely start with Pena and the interior visit. Go outside then otherwise the line increases at high speed v. So do Pena (at the opening) descend on the castle of the Moors and aim for the National Palace around 2:30-3 p.m. We avoided all the lines in the middle of August.
