Civitavecchia: Tuscany Full-Day Guided Trip w/Wine Tasting

Civitavecchia: Tuscany Full-Day Guided Trip w/Wine Tasting

The tour start from Civitavecchia port/area. You will drive north with your English-speaking driver, through the beautiful landscape of Tuscany. After about a 50 minute’s drive, you will arrive in Maremma. A unique feature of Maremma is the variety of its territory: crystal clear, long beaches or impervious rocks, mountains covered with dense woods, lake and flat areas, green cultivated hills and natural thermal areas. A timeless area, rooted in ancient civilizations: the Etruscans before and the Romans later prospered for centuries leaving important testimonies, as shown by the Etruscan sites of Pitigliano, Vulci and the Roman city of Cosa. Tasting will be combined to a wine tasting class: you will have the chance to taste a selection of tuscan wines produced by the winemaker. First stop is to visit Montemerano. This town flourished in the second half of the 10th century when the province’s residents began moving inland to escape malaria and the endless barbarian invasions that plagued the coastline. Montemerano was governed by a democratic institution until 1272, when it fell into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi. In the second half of the 13th century, it passed to the Baschi, the feudal family that funded its expansion. At the end of the 14th century, the “Repubblica Senese” forced the Baschi to retreat. In 1556, it became part of the Medici’s vast rule, before the Hasburg Lorraine assigned Montemerano to the Municipality of Manciano, where it remains today. Next stop will be the amazing hot springs waterfall in Saturnia, Cascate del Mulino originate from the sulphurous waters of the Terme di Saturnia, a nearby spa and hotel. The water flows from the natural spring at a temperature of 37.5°C (98°C) and thanks to the presence of a particular element, known as Thermal Plankton, it is thought to be good for the skin, as well as for the digestive, circulatory, motor and respiratory systems. The sulphurous waters of Saturnia were already known to the Etruscans first and then to the Romans who believed that the thermal waters, with their beneficial properties, were a gift from the gods. The power of the sulphurous water coming from a millenary spring has carved over the centuries the white travertine rock giving rise to natural pools where you can immerse yourself for a moment of relaxation and escape from reality. After that the last stop will be in Pitigliano a genuine medieval cities 12th century. It is also called the Small Tuscan Jerusalem, rises up out of a massive rock, creating a fascinating mix of architecture and nature, hanging on the “tufo” a local stone between green valleys with a magic vision. Admire the Orsini Palace, the Fontana Medicea and an aqueduct made of “tufo” from the 14th century. From the main square, three parallel streets enter the village, intersected by a series of picturesque alleys: staircases, little arcades and decorations will present you a real Tuscan experience.

Saturnia: the misterious healing waters

Saturnia: the misterious healing waters

Saturnia is a famous spa destination already known by the Romans who built a settlement in order to accommodate all the people sent there by the Cerusici (doctors). Saturnia is a famous spa destination already known by the Romans who built a settlement in order to accommodate all the people sent there by the Cerusici (doctors). The healing properties of these waters were already well exploited by the Romans. What is less known, however, is that this area was already appreciated and used during the Etruscan period. These people had an enormous respect for volcanic phenomenas, seen as an expression of some deities. Come and hike with me! I will take you to the top of an hill where it lays a roman water cistern known as Castellum Acquarum from which you will be able to see an incredible sightseeing that stretches from the mountain to the sea. You will discover the secrets of the ancient Aurinia (Saturnia), and enjoy the beneficial effects of the healing waters of this place which has continued to fascinate humanity for over 2500 years. Mirko was a wonderful guide. He was caring and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his company as we were transported to some stunning destinations. We loved the hot springs at Saturnia. Montemerano was so picturesque. Pitigliano was uniquely amazing. We can't say enough good things about the Villa Aquaviva. The setting and surrounding landscape was truly breathtaking. The host, Fabrizio was so welcoming. The experience was immensely informative and so relaxing. The wines were delicious as was the complimentary salami, ham, cheese, bread and olive oil. Bellissimo! We would love to visit again.

A fabulous day with Mirko! It was exactly what we wanted to do for our day trip to Tuscany. The villages were free of tourists, authentic Tuscan villages. The wine tasting couldn't have been better. A wonderful day!!
