Full description

Discover the natural landscapes of Colombia on this guided excursion. Visit Santa Catalina, and bathe yourself in the purifying mud of the volcano.

As the minivan leaves town, hear some curious facts about Cartagena's history and some tips to ensure a better experience at the mud volcano. The trip to Santa Catalina, another beautiful Colombian city and the location of the volcano, lasts around 45 minutes.

Upon arrival at the volcanic zone, be greeted by the owner of a small nearby restaurant. Then, prepare for a unique experience as you climb the 50 steps that surround the volcano; remember to wear old clothing as the mud can be rough on delicate materials.

Immerse yourself in the volcanic mud, reaping the health benefits for your skin from the millions of minerals. Some people say afterward, you'll appear 10 years younger. Inside the volcano, you can float thanks to the high number of minerals present. There will be some locals around offering massages for an extra price of 2 USD. Outside of the volcano, pay to get your photo taken for another 2 USD. When the soaking is over, head to the lake for a shower.

Before continuing back to the city, enjoy a typical snack in a rustic restaurant. Get dropped off at your hotel.

David or Hazeus was great for the tour. He explained everything, picked us up on time, briefed us about tipping, what to expect and what time we would be back approximately at our pick up points. Everything was great on the website, economical and you really can't go wrong using Backpackers. When we arrived, it was pouring down rain and that just made the adventure more interesting. There was no turning back and I intend to tell other friends about the fun to be in relaxing, volcano mud that you float in. You won't believe it but I am a big 260lb guy. I floated and survived. The local people were courteous also and the trip was great. I am going again.

This was a pretty good and interesting experience. The mud Volcano does get crowded and you may have to wait on line. Everyone expects a tip but the tour company does a good job of trying to collect all the tips and having them spilt it instead of having each person come up to you. It can be overwhelming.

Such a great experience! The sky was cloudy that day and it made for an awesome time at Totumo. Guides came to pick us up on time. The driving in Cartagena can be quite crazy but our driver was the most careful driver I encountered the entire trip. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Everything was well organized and we were allowed plenty of time at the volcano site. Never felt rushed at all. I went in the afternoon and our group were the only ones present for a while. Not sure how this compares to the morning tour but I would assume it is more crowded then.
