This tour was among the most interesting we've taken. Our guide Serena and our driver Tomasso were knowledgeable and accommodating. Serena was a fountain of information about Carrara and the marble mines. Her family has been involved in some aspect of the marble industry for generations so, as she said, she was born with marble in her veins. Her passion is obvious. Tomasso was an excellent driver, navigating the winding mountain roads in the 4x4 perfectly. Seeing the marble in its natural state was amazing and on a scale that's hard to comprehend without seeing it in person. We highly recommend this tour. One precaution - we found it impossible to get a taxi in Carrara, even with a direct number. My husband and I had to walk from the station to the tour meeting point, about 2km. Luckily we had arrived early enough to get there in time. Tomasso very graciously offered to take us back to the station after the tour. Maybe the tour operator could offer station pickup for an extra fee?

At first I was not sure if 70€ is worth this guided tour but now I can honestly recommend doing it. The guides were very friendly and knew a lot of details and gave a good overview of historical and economic facts about the quarry and the industry here in Carrara. If you are here this is definitely a tour to keep an eye on :) (the ride up the mountain is a bit rough so if you suffer from horrible back pain, maybe not the best choice for you :D)
